Jaguars Hire Greg Olson As Quarterbacks Coach, Assistant Head Coach

Photo

The Jacksonville Jaguars have finally hired a quarterbacks coach. The team will hire former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Greg Olson, according to a team release.

Olson is in his 11th season in the NFL and his seventh as an offensive coordinator. For the past three years he was the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Olson was the quarterbacks coach when he joined the Buccaneers in 2008 and he worked closely with quarterback Josh Freeman throughout his time there. He also served as offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions in 2005 and St. Louis Rams in 2006-07.

Olson has experience working with quarterbacks. He worked with Josh Freeman, Mark Bulger, Jeff Garcia, and Drew Brees when Brees was at Purdue. Olson also worked with the Detroit Lions under Steve Mariucci working with Joey Harrington. According to the release, Olson will also hold the title of assistant head coach along with defensive coordinator Mel Tucker.

Lol I got fooled

by the title…I was thinking the player Greg Olson. But what about our coaching staff, stuff with great minds. My optimism of Gabbert’s potential has rised to another level. My hope with all these good minds of coaching a QB, Gabbert has to succeed He has not choice but to take advantage of the coaching he’s being surrounded by. Great hire btw. Love the staff from top to bottom.

This is turning out to be a really good staff...

…we get an O.C. to be our QB Coach, I’m thinking that’s why he’s an assist. head coach, and he’ll also help with the play calling. Has a good amount of experience with some good QBs. He was still in the mix at Chicago, but comes here instead…why? Because Jacksonville is in a good situation, and this is a very attractive spot for coaches.

The less people to help out with the play calling the better.

He was hired because he’s familiar with Bratkowski.

Well

if Bratkowski needs some advice or another mind to collaborate with, he’s got Olson

One

of the reasons I am excited about Gabbert’s potential success…He has to take advantage of the opportunity being provided.

I'm kinda wondering about this hierarchy (not skepitcal, just wondering)

Mularkey seems like he’s going to be the master delegator. Perhaps Bratkowski is one of those old sage people to have around that is past his prime.

This works for the Steelers.

To be a scout

You have to get a college internship. I don’t know all the regulations, but I’m pretty sure the Bucs are the only team down here that are even taking applications.

that’d be the only reason, I’d go to college lol. I want to do something that I’m interested in…Football > Cars > Rest of Life…if the first two don’t workout, I may just go in the military, as it’s my fallback option.

Suggestion

You know what you want, which is way better than most people your age. I’d love to be a scout, but as a husband and father, even at 24 I feel too old to get started.

Work backwards and set milestone goals, then reach them. As long as you have a clear and concise plan, you’ll always have the next goal to reach.

I don't know how to achieve that

though, what do I have to do, what do I have to major in…blah blah blah

Rhett, you should should contact

A few college athletic departments and ask them about scouting? Start there and see what they say.

by JagSoldier on Jan 19, 2012 10:00 PM EST up reply actions

JagSoldier has the right idea

The thing you’re going to have to first get your head around is that you will have no control over who you work for, as getting a job anywhere is the first priority.

Working backwards from scout, you must have an internship. In order to have an internship, you must go to college for something that would be permitted in an internship program, in order to do that you must have appropriate grades, blah blah blah, but before all else you must be armed with the information that will allow you to make all these decisions.

Right now you’re in the collect information stage. Once you have collected the information, you must apply apply apply. If you know what grades you need or what colleges put out the most scouts and what major you need to help you along the way, the only rational thing left is to actually start trying to accomplish all of these things.

Along the way, I would suggest writing a letter to anyone and everyone that will listen. People these days get very little snail mail, and it’s something that could make you stand out if it’s professional enough. Hell, you never know what could happen, but at least you’d get your name out there.

As far as your interest in cars, let that be a side quest until you’re actually prepared to start entering the working world, as you could probably get in at an entry level job and work your way up if you already have a good idea of what your doing. You will never get to a point in your life where you’re saying “man I’m just too old and too deep in other things to try and start up a career in automobiles” the way you would with football.

it is also cheaper for gas there(compared to NY) which is perhaps the only good thing about the state. When I have to head into Jersey filling up on gas is usually not passed on.

No.

His second season when he finished the year with a 95.9 passer rating by throwing for 25 TD’s and 6 interceptions. It’d be unrealistic to expect Blaine to make that kind of improvement but if he could at least get his TD to INT ratio down to 2:1, that would be more than good enough for me.

2009 was the disaster known as Raheem Morris’ first season. If I were a Bucs fan, I’d be concerned. TB only really won one game they shouldn’t have in 2010, the season ender at NOLA.

This coaching staff on paper seems to be legit. Also Khan seems to be legit. Gene says “we will be very aggressive” on offensive free agents and we can all take comfort in knowing for once he’s telling the truth. His success lies on Gabbert and he knows Gabbert needs big time targets in order to succeed especially after last season. I don’t want to hear the word “rebuilding”. We’ve been hearing “rebuilding” for 10 years. Give it a rest. The games and dysfunction days are over. The time is now and I mean right now.
