Khan on Tebow

Not trying to make a big deal out of this, but I don't really think he should have said this in an interview. I know I know it probably means nothing and he was just saying it in conversation, but still he needs to leave the personel decisions up to the GM. Makes me feel like he is going to be a Jerry Jones type of owner. Of course it could just be an isolated incident but what do yall think? p.s. this is my first post here so if I did anything wrong please let me know. (edited to give the link correctly)

Not a big deal.

Khan would have drafted him in round 3-4 where he belongs.

Khan would not have drafted him period.

He, from everything he has said, has said he’ll leave the football to the football folks. I don’t believe that Smith would have drafted Tebow at all. Nothing I’ve seen from Tebow, aside from a lightning in a bottle AFL esque performance against Pittsburgh showed me anything. His game was pretty much suck for 50 or so minutes then when the team lays back, nickle and dime them.

With Khan, you’ve got a guy who is on a PR junket and wants to please constituents (potential ticket holders). He’s going to say what he feels is the “politic” answer, especially when he’s aided by the fact that what’s done is done and the likelihood of Tebow getting cut from Denver before he gets exposed for what a lot of people think he is slim. No one questions the kid’s guts, heart or leadership, just his ability to consistently throw the ball down the field and hit his receivers. The questions with Tebow are similar to the questions with Gabbert. Can they get the job done now that teams have tape on them? How much will they improve when they both have the luxury of a full offseason? Denver will have a first place schedule next year. We have a 3rd place schedule. Denver did a lot of similar stuff that we did in 2010 when we also finished 8-8.

True.

And Denver isn’t doing him any favors by molding the offense to his style instead of trying to implement a true pro set and change his mechanics. Elway doesn’t even believe in him…

Get use to Khan saying.....

things that our previous owner wouldn’t think about saying. I think its refreshing but I do understand your concern. However, I would like to think Khan is more like the other Dallas owner, Mark Cuban, than Jerry Jones.

C'mon Khan

I think he needs a bit of public spotlight practice. He is certainly not shy about putting himself out there (which I like), but you can tell he hasn’t done it much. He’ll learn to say the right things.

I love it

He talks like a fan. He wants to win, he wants to spend money, he wants Jacksonville to have a winner.

He spent 760 million, he can say what he wants and do what he wants. It’s all his

Hell no lol hahahaha

Just kidding, but you are right. It probably would have drove the Tebow lovers farther away.

I just think it undermines the whole

thing that the GM is going to be picking who plays for our team ya know? He could have said that he felt Tim was not right for our team or something. He didn’t need to say he would have for sure drafted him, thats like calling out the GM on making a bad pick.

You're right

in the sense that all he needed to say was “I would have drafted Tebow, but we pay Gene well because he is good at his job.” Again, this skill will come with time.

Yeah

I guess he just is a little rough around the edges when it comes to saying the right things in public (Only season ticket holders are fans). He is probably not yet used to having everything he says be recorded and scrutinized.

missing the point

Did he say he’d have drafted him in the first round? At the 10 spot?

taken from the interview in the Daily Record

This was taken from Khan’s interview with another Jacksonville publication Monday morning on his press junket. Please read the entire thing. It’s easier to give a detailed answer to an interviewer for a newspaper than tv.

Would you have drafted University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow (who is QB for the Denver Broncos)?

Yes. This is an issue, by strange coincidence, I was involved in with Wayne a couple of years ago.

I have a very clear bottom-line answer. Absolutely I would have.

Two years ago, I was engaged with the St. Louis Rams and they had the No. 1 draft pick. I talked to Wayne during that time and had shared with him, ‘you should be drafting him’ and I gave him my case for that, which was an athlete like Tim Tebow from Jacksonville comes once a generation. He is going to really connect the Jaguars to Jacksonville and they should do it.

Wayne gave me very logical, very clinical answers on reasons why he wouldn’t do it. I went back to the Rams, their player personnel folks, I said, you’ve got to tell me, if you were Jacksonville, would you be drafting Tim Tebow? They said absolutely not. It was like they were reading from the same script Wayne had read from.

I said, there comes a time where emotion trumps rationality and this, if I was an owner, would be one of those moments for me.

It is a very divisive, polarizing kind of an issue, Tim Tebow.

It’s amazing, I was in Denver that game with San Diego when they were way behind and they finally put him in. I was there with the owners. I saw the whole drama and how the stadium changed and the great success he had.

He could have gone down in flames and I could be sitting here telling you I would have drafted him.

I don’t want it to come off as just a callous remark about second guessing. It’s not that at all.

Well? What does that transcript tell you? Here’s my $.02. He wanted to from a sheer marketing standpoint without all of the information given. He even said that in a later question. In fact, he seemed to go out of his way to namedrop Tebow several times and later made mention of his season ticket holder gaffe. I really wonder if he’s not trying to overcorrect to bring the Gator fans back to the fold.

The folks in the know who have done this for a living said they would not have taken him at that point. It’s all a matter of how much influence he would have in the war room. Would Khan let his football people do their jobs or does he have veto power for any personnel decisions? That is the real question.

You never take a player in the first round

To just sell tickets. We would have been screwed if we picked Tebow, no other team in the N.F.L has as much allegiance to a college team as the Jags do to the Gators. SMH

he cited Butkus and Grange though which was kind of funny

because both guys were from different eras in terms of the way the NFL does business. Moves that are made based on emotion can cripple a franchise. Look within the division, Vince Young was forced upon Jeff Fisher by Bud Adams.

What kind of business man would want the most popular sports athlete in America on his team?

http://frontrow.espn.go.com/2012/01/espn-sports-poll-tim-tebow-is-americas-favorite-active-pro-athlete/

The kind that can afford to buy the Jaguars for sure!
