If things go right our first pick is?

The way i see it everyone know's we need a WR. With this class of free agents we should be able to find a #1. I think Bowe & V.Jackson will resign with there teams so that leaves us M.Colston as our #1 & we sign M.Manningham as our #2. That being said we found our WR's so now we find a pass rusher like M.Williams or C.Avril and resign J.Mincey. That being said thats a nice free agent class so we turn our attention to the draft. So with the #7 pick in the 2012 nfl draft the Jacksonville Jaguars select CB Dre Kirkpatrick. (first post please go easy on me)!

If we consider Kirkpatrick, then I really think Jenkins would be worth a look. (pending all due diligence has been done.)

And watch some jackass say, “see! North Alabama! Told ya Gene only goes small school!”

I agree

If they would be willing to pick Kirkpatrick they would have to be willing to pick Jenkins, and personally I think Jenkins is the better corner.

by Sylvester.The.Jaguar.fan on Jan 31, 2012 6:31 PM EST up reply actions

2 things to that thought process

First: Kirk isn’t a repeat offender like Jenkins
Second: Jenkins isn’t physically the type of CB Gene has been bringing in here.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 31, 2012 9:31 PM EST up reply actions

In what way is he a repeat offender?

To my knowledge he only got caught once as did kirkpatrick, but honestly lets not pretend it was a one time thing for either.

He isnt as big as Cox or Issac but not that far off and I don’t count the FAs, when you talking about wavier wire guys, measurables is almost all you have to go on.

by Sylvester.The.Jaguar.fan on Feb 1, 2012 12:55 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

LOL...whaaat? Jenkins was arrested 3 times in Gainseville. Including twice in 3 months!

Also, received a ticket for another incident, but wasn’t arrested.
I’m not saying don’t draft him, but he’s the very definition of a repeat offender.

I agree with you assessment of Bowe and V-Jax...

I don’t think their teams let them go. The Saints probably can’t retain all of their WR’s. The last I read the Texans are running out of cap room and may not be able to retain Mario. With all that said I could live with Dre. Still, what about his recent brain fart? Does he have other previous issues?

by muddyballs on Jan 31, 2012 1:28 PM EST reply actions

I think Gene will look past that

by jagsfan219 on Jan 31, 2012 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

Kirkpatrick would

Be a great pick he would be a stud for many years. I just hope gene moves past his one incident and makes the safest pick for a position we do need

by jaguars32 on Jan 31, 2012 1:53 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions

Most mock drafts have Coples, Reiff and Kirkpatrick as BAP at #7

There are all talented and its going to come down to what Gene’s draft board ranks them at. I like the Kirkpatrick pick, though personalIy I think Coples would be a better pick. Coples has his own character problems to but he was dominate at the Senior Bowl and has the size and talent to become an elite passr rusher in NFL. Coples and Mincey (if resigned) would be a young, talented DE duo for years.

by kterr on Jan 31, 2012 1:58 PM EST reply actions

yep

Although< i originally was wanting a WR in the first round, it doesnt look like will happen, so I think you are right on target, if we get 2 good WR in FA, and resign mincey, and possibly get avril, then there is no reason to NOT get our tackle problem hopefully resolved, and that would be adams or reiff.

by zunklives on Jan 31, 2012 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

What about...

Colston and Stevie Johnson at WR

and Avril/Mario at DE?

Draft Kirkpatrick or Claiborne round 1

Vinny Curry or Whitney Mercilus round 2

What ya think?

by bdk790 on Jan 31, 2012 2:29 PM EST reply actions

The only thing is what type of money are these free agents going to want?

Coston-8-10 mil a year?
Stevie Johnson-8-10 mil a year?

Avril-7-9 mil a year?

that’s about 30 million right there..

by bdk790 on Jan 31, 2012 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

So?

Fidelis Ad Mortem

by JPQ! on Jan 31, 2012 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

that does not leave a lot of money to address the other needs

I think the jags only have like 36 mill in cap space. throw in the need for o-line, cb, etc. and not sure the room is ther if 30 mill is committed to those 3 guys.

Kirkpatrick isnt the guy

get the FA WR’s, sign avril and resign mincey, and work on our o line, and our offense, we need the defense we had last year back, and even a improvment on DE(we can do that in FA with a PROVEN guy) So we need to address our o-line darnit, and get our running around like a chicken, rookie qb some piece of mind, to sit back there and hit the guys we spent all that cash on in FA, DO NOT WASTE OUR FIRST PICK WITH A GUY WHO ALREADY HAS SHOWN HIS IMMATURITY. And dont waste our first pick on a guy who has been all over the place like coples, our D is good, lets fix our O darnit

by zunklives on Jan 31, 2012 3:53 PM EST reply actions

How is the D good?

The only good pass rusher, Mincey, is a free agent so the Jaguars might need two new DEs. At cornerback we need at least one starting caliber player as Mathis is a free agent and even if he is resigned he is aging and coming off a serious injury. Most people forget that Dwight Lowery is a free agent as well. Obviously their are bigger needs on offense but the defense has issues too and not drafting the best player available because hes a defensive player would be irresponsible.

by kterr on Jan 31, 2012 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

Mike Mayock

has Kirkpatrick listed at 5th best CB. I wouldn’t normally pay any attn to that if it was Mel Kiper or someone but I really respect Mike Mayock alot. He knows his stuff.

big alabama fan here

I’ve watched almost all Alabama games this year, and as defensively dominate as Bama is, I really don’t Kirkpatric or even upshaw are worthy of the top 16 picks or so..

I believe they are more a reuslt of excellent coaching, and amazing surrounding support rather than pure skill or athleticism.
Obliously Claiborne is better, but he and kirkpatrick aren’t even in the same league to me.
Excellent safety play and saban = overhyped CB
so please no more talk of kirkpatrick at #7 .. i hope we get your FA signings though

by he aint drew on Jan 31, 2012 5:37 PM EST reply actions

Thankyou

Watching their defense closely, they are all benefiting from good talent around them, but as individuals they are good but not elite imo. A lot of NFL talent on the team, just don’t think there is a lot of elite nfl talent on the team. Kind of like taking the worst NFL defense and letting them play in college, all of them would look like top 10 talents.

its not going to be kirkpatrick

not now not ever. hes a good player but hes the second best player in the draft at a position that isnt extremely high need. factor in his character issues this all= not him

by Jaggaholic82 on Jan 31, 2012 9:52 PM EST reply actions

extremely high need

WR is the only position that fits that description. Does that mean you would take 2nd best WR @ 7.

by CheapSeat on Feb 1, 2012 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

no id take the best player at one of the positions we need

which in my opinion is RT, DE, WR, CB. so whoever is rated highest out of those positions when we draft is that guy i would take and i think gene will probably do the same

Coples and get the Bentley kid on the BCC FP in the 3rd

Good corners can be found throughout the draft. A premium pass rusher is more difficult to find IMHO.

by Slvrgun on Feb 1, 2012 1:58 PM EST reply actions

My idea of things going right:

Trade to Chitown so that they can select Blackmon, which sends the fan base afire, desiring him ourselves. We receive the Bears 1st 2nd and 2013 2nd.

1) Mohammed Sanu | WR | Rutgers-Something just has me feeling this will be it.
2) Vinny Curry | DE | Marshall-Best pure pass rusher in the class, but concerns else where with his game
2) Nate Potter | OT | Boise State-Screams Gene Smith as a 4 year starter and captain. Developed as a pass protector, but has room to work in ht run game, but that should improve with bulk.
3) Dwight Bentley | CB | LA Lafayette-The current BCC darling is certainly rising.
4) Ladarius Greene | TE | LA Lafayette-Bentley’s teammate could be a headache to match up to especially in 2 TE sets with the reemergence of Marcedes.
5) Phillip Blake | OC | Baylor-The man who snapped the ball for RGIII could be a good option to develop under Meester.
6) Lavasier Tuinei | WR | Oregon-In Oregon’s high powered offense he didn’t get featured much, but came up big in their bowl. Definitely a player to watch develop in the NFL.

Free Agents, Khan open’s up the piggie bank:
Mario Williams-Like Poz, I think Mario will opt to leave Houston to go back to the 43. Some may think Houston would look to Franchise him, but with a young budding defense and contracts to fill else where I think the team will let him walk.
Dwayne Bowe-Jacksonville would get their first true #1 WR in a while here.
Robert Meachum-With so many option, and so great of options, it is hard to shine in NO’s offense, but Meachum may benefit from being more of a focus on offense and allow him to gain more chemistry with his QB being on of only a few reliable targets in Jacksonville.

by rws591 on Feb 2, 2012 1:27 AM EST reply actions

So tired about reading

Khan opens up the piggy bank.

Weaver spent plenty as all teams do, BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO. This past year was the exception with not minimum but it’s not like they didn’t spend plenty of money to shore up the defense.

by pksiv on Feb 3, 2012 10:32 AM EST up reply actions

Weaver never brought in big name guys

was never in the bid for the top name guys. Khan is, why can’t we be excited about that?

by bdk790 on Feb 3, 2012 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

Forget that.

Big name guys don’t win championships. Me, personally, I could care less about a big name, just bring in people that can contribute the way Gene did last offseason. And considering Gene is still the one making the personnel decisions, you shouldn’t be getting your hopes too high about any “big names” being pursued to come here. Although, I will say that I think it’s a realistic chance Gene could potentially get involved in the Mario Williams chase should he reach free agency.

think about it this way

Say we did get Eric Weddle. Then we likely don’t get Landry, Lowery, or Coleman, or All 3.

Never thought about it like that.

I’ll take those three over the Pro Bowl season Weddle had any day.

by kjones407 on Feb 7, 2012 9:25 PM EST up reply actions

Big names don't win championships?

As in drew Brees or Arron rodger or Tom Brady or Bret Favre? Or big Ben or Kurt Warner. Marshal Faulk, Reggie white, Eli manning, Payton manning, ray Lewis, Charles Woodson, the list goes on. Big names win championships, not mike Thomas and chasten west

by bdk790 on Feb 5, 2012 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

Right.

Thing is about your comment is next to none of the players you mentioned were free agents that went to another team and helped them win a Super Bowl. Most of them are players that the team drafted and developed into big name players. Funny enough, the first two players you mentioned (Brees and Rodgers) have won Super Bowls before but both of their teams was have been eliminated from the playoffs. It’s a team sport and having big name players doesn’t gurantee anything.

by kjones407 on Feb 5, 2012 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

ill take

jeffery 1st round
curry
2nd round

by heightz89 on Feb 2, 2012 10:35 AM EST reply actions

hmm

i’ll take signing Manningham, Hixon (he is a FA also and probably will be semi-cheap).
Mario Williams resign Mincey
draft Coples at 7
draft Minnfield in the second (resign Mathis if cheap enough anyway)
draft Egnew in the 3rd
rounds 4-6 depth plus maybe a punter
Let Roth walk, resign all other FAs.

by Kyle Lipsey on Feb 3, 2012 12:32 PM EST reply actions

If Gene...

resigns Mincey and was able to get Mario Williams, Coples would not be the selection come draft time.

by kjones407 on Feb 3, 2012 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

why not

I don’t think the Giants complain about having too many pass rushers.

Its about keeping guys fresh. Coples wouldn’t be forced to start which would be good for him.

And everyone likes the OT pick at 7, but with Bradfield and Britton at RT and another young guy whose name I can’t remember, with Britton being able to swing inside, Uche playing well and Rackley coming along, and Monroe in his place I don’t see OL being as big a need as some think, even with Brittons injury history. The top 2 WRs will likely be gone. Any other WR isnt worth top 10. Richardson doesn’t fit us even if he falls. Kirkpatrick just got in trouble, Jenkins got in trouble a lot. If we don’t trade down I see Coples being the pick no matter what if he is there, unless Claiborne slides or something like that.

I don’t think I’m missing anything unless its an unknown Gene guy like the Alualu pick.

by Kyle Lipsey on Feb 3, 2012 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

First off...

your Giants comparison isn’t a fair one because they have pure pass rushers on their team and should Gene resign Mincey and was to draft Coples, we still wouldn’t have what they have. Neither, Mince nor Coples are dynamic pass rushers like Tuck, Osi or JPP.

Secondly, that would be too much money tied up into one position. Yeah, Coples would be coming in under the rookie scale but between Mince and Williams, that would already be enough of the cap tied with their salaries alone.

Lastly, there is too much time between now and the draft to say for sure who’s going to go where. So to say you don’t see anyone being the pick except for Coples if we don’t trade down or if someone falls isn’t giving room for all the things that could happen between now and the draft. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Gene has some player none of us know about ranked just as highly as Coples that he could draft in the lower rounds.

by kjones407 on Feb 3, 2012 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

Luke Kuechly

He will be the pick if the top 6 players are off the board. Kirkpatric is slipping now. Top 6 players are Coples, Blackmon, Kalil, Luck, Griffin, Claborne. I think they will all be taken before JAX.

by childintime12 on Feb 5, 2012 11:47 AM EST reply actions

Trade back take Kendall wright

i like colston and and manningham that would be a good look even though after the super bowl manningham may want more than hes worth in that case i go douglas i would rather sign grimes or finnegan to play corner trade back in the draft get extra picks take k wright and vinny curry in the draft and resign mincey and another D.E for depth at a lower price super marios to risky coming of that knee surgery think aaron kampman.
