2012 NFL Free Agency: Leger Douzable

Over the course of the next few weeks I'm going to look at the Jaguars with contracts expiring at the end of the 2011 league year in March.

Leger Douzable came to the Jaguars at the beginning of the 2010 training camp after being released by the Lions. Prior to his short time with the Lions he spent the majority of the 2009 season on the Rams practice squad and the majority of the 2008 season on the Giants practice squad.

After coming into the league as a defensive tackle and even spending most of his two seasons with the Jaguars at tackle, he was recently moved to defensive end to start in the place of the injured Matt Roth. During his six starts at defensive end, Douzable did relatively well and may have earned a new contract with the Jaguars.

Star-divide

While Douzable wasn't the best pass rusher recording one sack in his six games, as a coverted defensive tackle that's not particularly surprising. While Douzable is 11 pounds lighter than he was at his UCF pro day back in 2008, he's still a heavy 284 pounds on a 6'4 frame. For comparison's sake, Jeremy Mincey is 270 pounds at 6'3 and John Chick is just 248 at 6'3.

As a run stopper, Douzable was a very solid piece on the Jaguars defensive line at the end of the season after serving as a strong rotational player earlier in the year.

Perhaps with a new role at defensive end, Douzable will continue to slim down and shape himself into an every down defensive end. Regardless whether he does or not, he has been an ascending player and he could be a player that the Jaguars could consider signing to another contract to keep on a defensive line that was decimated by injuries in 2011.

He should be resigned

as he’ll likely come back cheap. An offseason or two training at defensive end under joe cullen, he may become a good pass rusher too.

If he gets

into DE shape and gets better awareness for the position, he could easily be better than Roth.

but maybe the size

is what makes him good at DE, hes like a 34 DE right now in a 43.

depth and competition

he didn’t seem to be a liability to my untrained eye. he’s proven he has the ability and desire to play in the nfl. make someone come in and take his roster spot from him.

For the right price

sure. He will add depth. I do believe Mincey proved his worth this season and needs to be brought back. The Scobee resigning scares me though. Makes you wonder if Gene tried to give him an extension during season and he refused to and wanted to test the market. Thats the only way to explain why the second most productive player on this offense was not extended during the season.

The only good thing to come out of all the injuries the defense had

is that we got a really good look at how the defensive depth is for the team, and who to retain in the offseason.

Glad to finally join my fellow Jaguar brothers and sisters

Good guy, Hardworker

Played well when he was called upon. Pro Football Focus has been raving about his performances. I would expect his deal would be somewhere in the 1.5 to 2 million a year range with a decent bonus. Thats just a educated estimate though, might be a little higher or lower.

Majority

of this defense needs to return. Everyone of the starters who is a FA and a lot these backups like Douzable should get resigned. I stand firm that if we’d of had a middle of the pack offense this defense would have been #1. Also just curious but is there any updates on the severity of Chicks injury?

Torn patella tendon

Barring a setback he should be back for training camp it looks like. The one thing that scares me a little bit is that this is the injury that really setback Cadillac Williams career as he lost a lot of power in that leg. Everyones different though, hope for the best.

Really good work

He’s an asset to this team. Whether he ever gets better or not, it’s good to have a player that can fill a role in 3 different places on the DL and play solid football. He’s the kind of guy that gives this team depth.
