Mike Mularkey Leading Candidate For Jaguars Job, According To Report
The Jacksonville Jaguars head coach rumors are beginning to swirl, as yesterday it was said that Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden was the "favorite", which is odd since the Jaguars have not requested permission to speak with him, at least to my knowledge. Now, we have a new leader in the clubhouse. According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator is the leading candidate as it stands. If Mularkey is the hire, he will reportedly bring former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Clyde Christiensen with him.
Colts offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen, if let go, could be a strong candidate for the position based on his previous experience with Smith for the Buccaneers. But an NFL source said if Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey lands a head coaching job (the Jaguars and Bucs are interested in him) Christensen will go with him. The source said Mularkey will be the leading candidate in Jacksonville.

Need to hit homerun with an OC
Even if we don’t go with an Offensive Mind for the head coach, we definately need to hit a homerun with an OC…Tom Clements sounds good too if he would leave GB. Gabbert (or any QB for that matter) looks like a good fit in that offense. I’d be ok with Mularky and Clyde..
This is mularkey

AND THEIR OFF !!!
Gruden out to an early lead, Now he’s being over taken by That’s my Mularky, Power Cowher and That’s my Mustache Fisher, two early favorites have fallen to the back of the pack.
Respect My Authoritah
I definitely liked the Cowher rumor better!

I know right! Just like the fire he has and track record is impressive.
by CoachCowherPlease on Jan 5, 2012 10:26 AM EST reply actions
If he had the fire to continue coaching
he’d be coaching already. A Guy with fire isn’t sitting on the sidelines waiting for the proper amount of cash to resume coaching
OR.. his wife had cancer and passed away may have been a reason for him to step down, doesn't mean he lost the passion or fire.
I like cowher, for many reasons, you may not and that’s fine.. he is one guy I think would change everything for us, from team mentality, to perception nationally, to ticket sales, to a winning team with a lot of postseason hopes..
I like some of the other options as well, but overall he is a proven commodity, I just don’t want JDR 2.0 that we have to give 5 yrs to actually see if he can adapt.. mularkey and gruden, or obrien, i think are just that, guys that MAY do ok, Chud seems like a better choice, but it is just my opinion and I don’t claim to know all so no need for bashing my choice..

If you have to throw a ridiculous amount of money at someone
to lure them on to your sideline, that’s hardly “fire.” It’s a cash grab. Pass

you get what you pay for! is cowher not ten times better than JDR? then surely he is worth twice as much!
say it however you want, but he would change everything in jax, like i said above, not to mention ability to attract a competent staff, and big time free agents.. where is the downside? surely it’s not the money cause you are not paying..
by CoachCowherPlease on Jan 5, 2012 1:40 PM EST up reply actions
I get why he stepped down
but that was 5 years ago…
How long was Cowher in Pittsburgh before he won a Super Bowl ?
Clyde Christensen was the Colts WR coach for years before being OC
Coached and trained Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon etc. Would be a good choice to revamp and train our awful WR group. Combine that with Mularkey’s experience with training a young QB (Matt Ryan) and we might develop a decent passing attack. At this point coaching “rumors” come up every other day but I would be okay with this one turning into reality.

Gabberts better than Matt Ryan already
If blaine had those type of weapons his rookie year would have been different. Matt Ryan isnt that good.

Matt Ryan is trash
His WR do everything fro him. Did you watch him play in primetime? He looked like a rookie.
by childintime12 on Jan 5, 2012 1:12 PM EST up reply actions
Are you insane?
I am a BC fan, and I watch all their games; when MattyIce was there he led them to #2 national ranking with NOBODY else on offense. The Eagles had a great defense and MattyIce throwing the ball. He is a great QB. If you can’t see that, you need to work on your analysis.
Fidelis Ad Mortem
so what hes regressing.
Even when he played the Jags he was not impressive

I agree
any QB that happens to have talent at WR on his team is total and absolute trash. Aaron Rodger * Drew Brees <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Baline Gabbert
Just the way it is. Montana and Young were also trash. Jerry Rice was the only reason they are even perceived as being hall of fame worthy QBs

I'd take Matt Ryan
over Blaine Gabbert. But that’s just me.
i wouldnt
unless you want a wild QB when hes a finished product.

In the long run, I wouldn't
but as of today, Ryan is a better QB

This really shouldn't be a surprise
Whether you like him or not, you can’t deny that Mularkey makes alot of sense for Jacksonville. The Jaguars and the Falcons are two franchises that are really close. Gene Smith has personally seen the way that Mularkey coaches in practice. His son is already a member of our scouting department. He has experience with working with a young quarterback, and he has head coaching experience. It just seems like alot of the pieces fit Personally I don’t really have a preference, I’ll take anybody not named Jack Del Rio

Most Falcons fans are ready
to see him gone so…
The Falcons
have had 4 straight winning seasons and have been to the Playoffs 3 out of those 4 years, I don’t really see how they can complain too much, seeing how this was a franchise that previously had never had back to back winning seasons in its entire history

That really annoys me about Falcon fans
Never had 2 straight winning seasons in their entire history but when they get 4 they hate it for some reason

I really believe Khan has the ace of spades up his sleeve. He’s bluffing with all these names that are being released. I think it’s not going to be any of these guys and backroom deals are getting done. He knows this fan base needs to be re-energized. Silence is virtue.

Why should we base the search solely off what the fans what
Big name hires get a lot of fan support right away because of their name and the attention they will get. Pleasing fans long term is only done by winning and the Jaguars should be committed to finding a coach who will do just that. That means finding the coach who is the best fit for this team. If that ends up being Gruden or Cowher then great, the big name is a bonus.

Winning gets fan support
everything else is just noise
I don't think I've seen an instance where Shad Khan or Gene Smith have mentioned a candidate
The Jaguars have requested permission from teams to interview their employees, as they are required to do. Khan has been pretty clear that he is not going to publicly conduct the HC search.
It’s like the old adage, “Those who say, don’t know; those who know, don’t say.”

I would almost venture to say if the guy has been mentioned in the media thus far, he's probably NOT going to be the head coach

already dislike him
apparently he is not too fond of throwing deep, and that is integral in an offense these days IMO. Teams are succeeding without it, but I think for a team like ours, it is a good thing to have.

I am going to venture a guess and say
a report will be out by tonight saying Mike McCoy is the favorite for the Jaguars coaching job. COnsidering Mularkey has not interviewed yet either(i assume given his team’s playoff appearance on Sunday) this is all totl nonsense, be it a reliable source or not.

Alfie, you are going to have a busy week
if you are reporting rumors from the likes of Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.
you're right, but it serves to prove just how much "those in the know" don't
I think one of the “insider” sites identified two different guys as the favorite YESTERDAY!, so not a ton of credibility there.
Section 442, RIP
"You think you know, but you don't know."
regardless of whether he's reputable or not
the only way he’d know who the “leading” candidate would be if Khan or Gene told him.
they’re the only two who know.
and I doubt they shared that info with Mr. Biggs.

"You think you know, but you don't know."
wasn't saying that
I love hearing the rumors. It’s why I have checked the site 27 times today. I was sincerely saying you will be busy trying to keep up with rumors from non-team sources.
the only reason a Chicago guy might know something is the fact that Khan has been based in Illinois

Chudzinski is the guy
They better get Chudz. He hasnt been mentioned too much. Id be fine with mularkey. pissed if its anybody named gruden. I really want Tucker to stay and i think hes going to as DC.
its came out gruden and mularkey as top choices
so whats ur point?

named top choices by the media
which doesn’t make it a fact.
Take stock in your lives, but leave your livestock alone
according to some guy in Chicago
the oc from Atlanta is the favorite for the job in Jacksonville…..
hey this just in, I’m from Pensacola, but I heard this guy in England is really interesting in becoming Japans Prime Minister….
Yesterday it was said from a guy in Portugal that someone from Pensacola was in line for the job….. so many people close to the action I just don’t know what to believe.
what part of Pensacola?

I’m fine with this guy as headcoach but I’m a bit iffy on his choice of OC. I want us to pay big money for a hot OC.

I would rather save that money for players
Playcalling won’t help if Blaine can’t get help from his receivers.
You can't reason with unreasonable people.
If you ain't first, you're last.
A coach’s salary doesn’t count against the cap. besides, Khan has already indicated he will spend more than Weaver.
by Catfanatic1979v1 on Jan 5, 2012 1:28 PM EST up reply actions
I know that
But if Khan is planning on spending big money up front (signing bonuses, etc,), I would rather see that money go to players, not coaches, unless it happens to be a certain former Super Bowl winning coach, which I doubt will happen.
