Doing nothing but making plays when he's on the football field, Jaguars wide receiver Cecil Shorts III finally is moving into a starting role.
The status of Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Laurent Robinson is unknown for Week 7 against the Oakland Raiders, as as of Wednesday he was still in the concussion program. With Robinson out last week against the Chicago Bears, Mike Thomas started in his place with Cecil Shorts III coming off the bench.
Shorts once again made plays for the Jaguars, picking up 43 yards on two receptions, including a 34-yard one-handed reception on just three targets. Shorts leads the Jaguars receivers in yards and is tied with Marcedes Lewis for touchdown receptions, but has played the least, leading many to ask why that's the case.
"Yeah we worked Cecil Shorts over at the X position these last couple days," Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey said on Wednesday. "He’s been over at the Z since really the beginning of OTA’s so we’re just trying to get him comfortable at that other spot. It is different and he’s got a lot of work over there."
Shorts has moved into the starting lineup this week and will likely be starting against the Raiders with or without Robinson in the lineup.
"I think he’s taking advantage of the situations that we’ve put him in," Mularkey said. He’s made some big plays so we’re going to give him a chance to do that."
