Blaine Gabbert injury: Jaguars QB won't be out long, if at all

Jake Roth-US PRESSWIRE

Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert reportedly has a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder, but will try to play through it.

Blaine Gabbert suffered a torn labrum in Sunday's loss to the Oakland Raiders, according to reports. Reports surfaced on Tuesday that even with the injury, Gabbert was going to try to play through the injury and start Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers. Even with a torn labrum, Gabbert should be able to play through the injury given it's in his non-throwing shoulder. The only reasons Gabbert would miss time is if he needs invasive surgery or the pain is just unbearable.

"There are things short of surgery that would most likely allow him to continue to play through the season," Dr. Orr Limpisvasti of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles told The Florida Times-Union. "The therapy and rehabilitation starts right away and it would be treated surgically only if he needed it and he was unable to play. In general, labrum tears can cause pain and instability, but NFL players often play with those injuries."

The Jaguars sent Gabbert's MRI to renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews, who some refer to as the NFL's "grim reaper". If Gabbert winds up needing in-season surgery to fix the problem, it's likely he'll only be out a handful of games. Typical recovery time is 2-3 weeks with a few weeks of physical therapy afterwards.

Gabbert may miss Sunday's game against the Packers, depending on how he handles practice on Wednesday if he hits the field as the team planned on Monday, but most feel that he will play through the injury. Gabbert threw a few passes on Sunday after suffering the injury, but a few of his passes sailed as he obviously kept his left arm tucked to his body.
