Most of the talk on twitter amongst Jaguars fans has been about what changes we would make, what we think the problems are, and laughably, should we have kept DG.
What changes should we make? It doesn't appear that many big changes can be made in the middle of a season. You cant install a new offense, defense, get any new impact players so you are pretty much stuck with the personnel that you have. Sadly for Jaguars fans, it's the personnel that is the problem. We constantly hear about defenses that "fly to the football." Most of the changes on Seattle's defense have been an influx of athletic players. The Giants defensive line, the entire Texans team, and San Fransisco have a roster full of guys that "fly to the ball." The Jaguars dont. The Jaguars saunter to the ball. The offense isn't explosive. Guys aren't fast off the line. The receivers aren't blocking well. The line isn't blocking well. Blaine isn't reading the defense well. So, we cant make any personnel changes but we can change the way that we call plays right?
The play calling is down right awful. I wish part of the All-22 access was hearing what is being said into Gabbert's helmet. It must be something like "If you dont throw at least 15 check downs out of 20 passes this game, you will have perpetual diarrhea for the remainder of the season." Blaine doesn't want diarrhea so he checks down to Greg Jones. Blaine Gabbert and Justin Blackmon, the presumable cornerstones of the offense moving forward, excelled in a more open style of offense before they were drafted. Why would that be different now? "Because bro, the spread doesnt work in the NFL, you idiot!" The spread or a professional version of it works in Green Bay, New England, and New Orleans. Even Houston, who relies heavily on their run game, spreads the ball out. Gabbert's best drives all season have come from a spread out formation. Granted, you cant run a 2 minute drill the entire game because....Jaguars? Maybe you can. Maybe you can limit the pass rush of other teams by having them completely gassed out. Maybe you can get the seperation that Blackmon needs by putting him in space. Maybe they can use these two weeks off to work on endurance and get ready to play at a fast pace. What do we have to lose?A majority of fans are growing tired of the Gabbert years. Has the coaching staff put him in a position to win? Sometimes. Have they designed schemes to fit his strengths? For sure not. Let's give it a try. We scored 3 points last week. It cant get much worse. When you have fans happy that we stayed with the Bears for almost 3 quarters when the result was losing by 38 points, changes are needed. Instead of staying the course, I want to recalculate the route otherwise I need more toilet paper because of all the Jaguars Diarrhea.
