So I was thinking about this because of kterr's post about Shorts. What do the Jaguars do with Robinson next season?
For arguments sake let us assume these points.
1. Shorts and Blackmon both keep playing like starting receivers.
2. Robinson recovers from his concussion issues.
Let us talk about the other receivers we have now before we answer the question.
Kevin Elliot. He is a big strong possession type, runs in the 4.5 range. He has shown a lot of potential but has yet to show it in a game. He is rookie and I am fine with that, takes time to develop. He is also a really good Gunner on special teams, so just for that he earns his spot in my opinion.
Jordan Shipley. He is a Wes Welker type receiver, as in he won't wow you with straight line speed but he runs good routes, gets in and out of breaks quickly and has reliable hands. He also has experience as a punt returner so he could possibly be utilized in that role.
Micheal Spurlock. He was signed for his return abilities and slot receiver experience and hasn't really done great in either, serviceable work though. He is also almost 30 so certainly not young.
Toney Clemons. Assuming the report is correct we just signed him from the Steeler's practice squad. He is a bigger receiver with decent speed(4.46 - 4.5). In college he showed the ability to play inside and outside and used his size inside and over the middle quite well. He is young and raw so could certainly use some development but shows some good potential as a slot receiver.
So after reviewing the current receivers does Robinson fit anymore? He could fit pretty well as the #3 slot receiver except that he is making #1 receiver money on a team that has a lot of holes to fill and could certainly use that money elsewhere. If Shipley/Elliot/Clemons could show the ability and consistency needed to play #3 slot I don't see a huge drop off from Robinson to one of them.
The more I think about it the more I believe the Jaguars should let Robinson go after the season, I can't imagine any team giving up a draft pick for a receiver with a big contract coming off a season with 4 concussions.
What do you guys think? Am I way off?
