Do The Jags Draft a WR in the 1st Round?
I’m not doing a mock draft until after free agency. However, I will still talk about who the Jags should try to draft in the 1st round. The major needs of the Jaguars are WR, DE, DB, and OL. Today, I’m taking a look at some of the top WR prospects in this year’s draft. These are the guys that the talking heads are predicting as possible 1st round picks. With the combine next month some of these guys may move up, or down and out of the first round.
Let’s say the Jaguars do not land a true number one WR in free agency and decide to draft a WR. Keep in mind if the Jags have not signed a big time WR in free agency, they should have addressed DE, OL, and CB in free agency. Right?
Justin Blackmon (Oklahoma State) Blackmon appears to be the only sure fire 1st round can’t miss at WR. Blackmon has been listed as high as 2nd pick and as low as the 6th pick in the draft. Blackmon has good size and speed. He played in a spread offense so he will need to show terms that he can run NFL route.
Kendall Wright (Baylor) Wright is a smaller WR with speed to stretch the field. Wright can be explosive after the catch, but needs to work on his route running. He is a smaller guy so blocking for the run is something he will need to improve on
Alshon Jeffery (South Carolina) Jeffery is a big physical WR with great hands. There is concern about his speed and route running. Many believe he is a 4.7 40 guy, which is too slow for the NFL. I am interesting to see what he runs in the 40. Jeffery is a long strider and takes time to get to top speed. Jeffery disappeared at times against the top CBs in the SEC. Jeffery is a bit raw and a high risk high reward WR.
Michael Floyd (Notre Dame) Floyd is a big physical WR with good hands, but is not explosive. Floyd like Jeffery is a long strider that takes time to get to full speed. Uses his big frame to create separation, but needs to improve his route running. Floyd comes with baggage being arrested a few times on alcohol related charges.
Mohamed Sanu (Rutgers) Sanu has great hands and good size. He is a strong WR with a nice burst. Sanu is a nice route runner and finds ways to get open. Sanu’s straight line speed is not great. Sanu is another guy that NFL teams will want to clock his true 40 time.
These are the WRs that could be 1st round picks, but there is a drop off after Blackmon. Once Blackmon is gone Wright and Floyd look like the next two to go in the draft. As of now the 7th pick looks too high to draft Floyd or Wright. Jeffery and Sanu could drop to the 2nd round and there are still other good WR in the draft without a 1st round grade. As a fan I am wanting the Jags find their number one WR in free agency. WR do take time to develop so a young guy may take a year of two to develop. Having a good veteran WR to help develop a young WR would be good.

Way too hard to say
Blackmon is definitely not worth moving up for or taking at #7. He is going to be drafted too high as is, so he is out of contention for the Jaguars.
Ideally, I think the move is to trade down and take the player on the board that fills a need and is rated highest. If the player happens to be a WR, then great. But if not, well then it is most definitely not worth reaching for a WR in Round 1

what has he shown that makes you think Blackmon is not worth the 7th pick?
His 180 yards and 3 touchdowns against Stanford in his last game?
He has the potential to be a #1 in this league. EVen if he did turn out to be only a #2, It would still make our offense better. He turns short passes into touchdowns. Put Blackmon and colston/Bowe together and see if our offense does not dramatically improve. Last time I checked, every team winning to super bowl had crazy talent at WR.. (GB,Giants,Steelers,Saints,Colts when they won).
I had the argument here. Not about to have it again.

I disagree.. Gene should find the best wr in the draft, and find a way to draft that wr. I don’t care if that means round 1 or round 5, but he better find the receiver he wants and grab him

so you were obviously happy when the Jaguar reached for both Matt Jones and Reggie Williams
those reaches turned out just great, no?

Every WR is different
As we all should know by now, reaches are in the eye of the beholder…
Blackmon would be an upgrade over ALL of our WRs currently

as would a ton of other receivers including Marvin Mcnutt
Let’s take him at 7.

Free agency may make it unnecessary.

+1
I like what I’ve seen of Sanu

Coples/OT in the first
WR/CB/OT in the second
CB/WR/OT in the 3rd

Free Agency
It’s easy to say the Jags will just get guys in free agency. However, the Jags aren’t the only team looking for WRs in free agency. The Jags will need to compete with other teams looking to sign FA WRs. With D. Jackson getting the franchise tag there are only a few guys left that are true number 1 WRs. The rest of the guys are complimentary guys like Manningham, Meachem, and Douglas. The important thing is for the Jags not to overspend on WRs in FA.
We are going to have to overspend
We are a small market team, with a heavily criticised young, and not considered an “elite” team. The money is what is going to bring these players in.
i agree
Its hard to drop a pass when its thrown perfectly.

Maybe draft someone else in the 1st round who's not a WR?

might fall into the second
but he has enough talent without the speed to still probably keep him in the second round at worst.

I am thinking that if he shows up that size and speed
There are RED FLAGS popping up about work ethic and stupidity (unprepared for important test)
Rumor debunked
RT @Schottey: Confirmed…Alshon Jeffery has been in Tampa since January 8th. IF he ran a 4.88 in Indianapolis, it was over a month ago.
he should not be running a 4.88 even a month ago

In general none of these receivers impress me
It seems this round has about 10 second round picks but none that warrent a high first rounder. A lot of these players will get overdrafted
blackmon is about it.
We should just trade back for more picks(brian quick please) ..blackmon will be long gone by 7.
