Around SBN: L'Equipe Claims He's Coming To Chelsea On Five Year Deal

The Jags Defensive End Dilemma

Mario Williams and Huston are working on a deal to keep him in Huston. The Detroit Lions have said they want to keep Avril in Detroit. Avril did say Detroit would not get a home team discount. Detroit could franchise Avril. The Arizona Cardinals have said they will work out a deal to keep Calais Campbell. Let’s face it folks, teams know what they have in their pass rushers and are willing to pay top dollar to keep them. I know it is no guaranty that these guys re-sign with their respective teams, but right now it looks like that is what’s going to happen. However, the free agency pool for defensive end is looking really shallow right now.

With that said, the re-signing of Jeremy Mincey just got a whole lot more important. Mincey is regarded as the 3rd/4th best DE free agent this year. Some have Mincey as 3rd while other have Robert Mathis as 3rd. Robert Mathis is 31 years old and has played his career opposite of Dwight Freeney, and benefited from the focus being on Freeney. The Jaguars will need to re-sign Mincey and Matt Roth, or get a DE help in the draft or free agency. The Jaguars are expected to release Aaron Kampman to free up some cap room. There is a possibility that Kampam will take a pay cut to stay in Jacksonville. At 32 years old with as many injury problems that Kampman has had, there will not be a long list of teams wanting to sign him.

So what should the Jaguars do about this dilemma ad DE? I think the Jags should re-sign Mincey, Keep Kampman, if he will re-structure his contact, and draft a DE in the first round. If Kampman is not willing to take a pay cut release him and re-sign Roth, and still draft a DE. Regardless the Jaguars must re-sign Mincey and don’t wait, resign him now. Below is a list of some of the top free agent defensive ends. Reports are that Williams, Avril, and Campbell will be re-signed by their current teams.

Mario Williams (HOU)

Cliff Avril (DET)

Calais Campbell (ARZ)

Robert Mathis (IND)

John Abraham (ATL)

Jeremy Mincey (JAX)

Personally, I would strongly consider resigning Mincey

cutting Kampman and letting Roth walk. Then sign Mathis to a three or four year deal and think about taking Coples with the seventh pick. Coples, Mincey, and Mathis would be legit with our DTs and would get great pressure like the Giants. We would finally have a great pass rush. We can draft a WR in the second after picking up two guys in FA.

I like it

But what about CB? I think WR, DE, and CB are top needs that the team must address in free agency and the draft.

Not all of our needs are going to be addressed

We can’t conceivably fix all our problems in one offseason. Smith is going to focus on a few positions and then hope we can find some gems late in the draft or with cheap FA signings.

Are DE position should look something like this Mincey, Roth, Lane, Chick, Kampman, Selvie, Morgan and Coples or Mercilus in the first round, thats a good DE group without getting Mathis, Williams or Cambell even though I believe Cambell is the only one of the three to get resigned

I'm not sure about Avril

Are his sacks a by-product of playing in a great D with destructive DTs like Suh, Fairley Corey Williams and Sammie Hill?

Mincey’s numbers went through the roof once we fixed our secondary and linebackers too.

I’d resign Mincey if it’s reasonable, Keep Chick, Selvie and Morgan and last chance for Lane.I’d resign Douzable and I’d draft one or two. I think the sacks are coming because the rest of our defence is better.

I wouldn’t be adverse to drafting Fletcher Cox in the first round a more explosive Douzable type without Cople’s atititude concerns. He’ll be coveted by 3-4 teams but he could be a quicker Alualu or a stouter Mincey.

What could of happened; did.

our DTs our just as good as the lions…and lane has done well, and well be a good backup for years…chick is a solid pass rush specialist, and morgan and selvie have way more to prove then lane(don’t see them making the squad)….i would like the line up to be williams, mincey, coples, lane, chick next yea

Umm yea

Lane has done what well? the offseason? He has yet to do crap in the regular season and is now coming off a serious injury, same thing with Chick who is closing in on 30 years old. And I love the enthusiasm but there is no way we are going to sign Williams for 20m (Based on current salary), give Mincey the 8m he wants (An educated guess), and then draft Coples who would take in about 4-5m a year (based on Aldon Smith’s #7 pick contract + inflation). Thats over 30m in one offseason for one position. Getting those players would be amazing I agree but financially unrealistic and things would have to fall perfectly into place. Not to mention tying that much money in DE’s would keep us from signing players in other positions such as WR, CB or OT.

jags

Resign Roth and Mincey and draft someone. Spend money on WR, CB and OL. Target an older DE like Abraham, Freeney or Mathis.

please

throw the sink at mathis. resign mincey. pray chick bounces back. pray lane becomes a player. flirt with alualu and douz playing outside in certain situations. avoid coples.

what we need to remember about Lane is that he wasn’t drafted 1st round. Therefore, he is expected to take a few years to develop. He had a bad injury last year, that slowed things down. I’d expect a pretty good year from him this upcoming year.
