Jaguars Switching To Black Uniforms?

The Jacksonville Jaguars were going to re-introduce the alternate black uniforms during the 2012 NFL season. Or at least, that's what we thought they were going to do with the black uniforms. According to Jaguars owner Shad Khan on The Mike Dempsey Show on 1010XL, black will be the Jaguars new primary color.

The Jaguars primary will be black, the secondary will be white and black, and the third alternate jersey will now be the teal color. Fans have long wanted the black jerseys to make a comeback after they were discontinued in the 2010 2009 season with the new Reebok jerseys. Black now will become the primary color but there will also be a complete uniform change in the 2013 season with Nike. The Jaguars are going to be the flagship for Nike's new uniforms and the first NFL team with completely new Nike uniforms.

Now... who I do I have to talk to to get a matte black helmet...?

What does this mean?

“The Jaguars are going to be the flagship for Nike’s new uniforms and the first NFL team with completely new Nike uniforms.”

Isn’t the whole NFL getting new Nike uniforms in 2013? What makes it better that the Jags are first? Kinda lost, not sure how that process works.

by jagzman04 on Feb 3, 2012 3:57 PM EST reply actions

It means...

The NFL unis you see in ‘12 are essentially just Nike’s fabric with the “swoosh” slapped on. No team will be seen in any sort of new threads next season.

In ’13, the Jags will be the first to use EXCLUSIVE Nike designs for their unis. (Think Oregon) Which from a national marketing side, is tremendous news for Jax.

by Jpon on Feb 3, 2012 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

Every team gets Nike uniforms in 2012

But that doesn’t mean they will change their current look.

Jaguars will be first team to be completely all Nike (materials, looks, etc)

I like the black unis are back

but I don’t like that every year there is a new philosophy with the jersey. That won’t help to establish the team’s identtity. (I’m happy about the Nike stuff).

He said there would be a change, but not something so crazy, as to not get away from the teams history. Sounds like they are just going to tweak the primary disign a bit. Definately not out of the ordinary when a new designer takes over. Dont think they want to get too far away from the brand. Lets face it Zoltan this team doesnt have too much of an identity outside of JAX. Except for the sect of awesome fans like yourself!

by chrisltr22c on Feb 3, 2012 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

If im not mistaken..he said it would be incorporated into the white and black. Then would be the 3rd alternate jersey. Lets face it and im old school, and just old now. I have been down at Alltel/Everbank since the inception. If thins is the re-birth then lets modify it. Not to bag on the color teal, but if im trying to makeover a franchise that has lost some fanbase. Then im bringing something new into the ORG. This guy isnt worrying about semantics with the faithful. He is trying to appeal to the new base that hasnt been tapped yet. WE ARE JAGUARS 2.0!

by chrisltr22c on Feb 3, 2012 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

There has to be a fine line.

I’d admit in a heartbeat that fans like me aren’t worth anything when compared to fans who have held season tickets since the inception. And now Khan’s statement about “true fans” makes that much more sense to me. Thank you for your comment.

Again, it doesn’t matter when they were last worn. They were still an option. As of 2010 2009 they NO LONGER became an option. They became discontinued. The last time they were worn is irrelevant to the overall point I made.

Yeah, let's get rid of that Teal that made our uniform unique...

And go with black. Because no one’s done that before…
Except the Raiders…
and the Saints…
and the Panthers…
and the Lions alternate uniform…
and the Cardinals’ alternates (which look terrible btw)…
and the 49ers alternates…

It really doesn’t matter in the longrun, but teal was kind of our thing and black is kind of… unoriginal.

Yep. Teal is different; I've always liked it.

A lot of NFL uni’s look very similar at first glance, including my Texans’. The Jags’ uni’s are distinctive with that color.

The black will look fierce and will have an identity. Right now the white unis are boring and the teal ones are just awful. The 90’s are over and so should this teal color. Hopefully Khan will soon change this ridiculous teal color with something else as well.

I like it but...

I agree let’s keep the teal as at least the secondary color. Aslo said on another post, it would be awesome to be the Oregon ducks of the nfl. ……… Guess I’ll have to paint my jag room black instead of teal hahah.

Do we really think building a new image should involve eliminating the old one?

I sorry guys, teal is and should remain our primary color. This team was born to this league in teal and had some tremendous moments in teal. We can’t base an image redo on the past 9 years of ineptibility. It’s throwing out the baby with the bath water!

Our image (and colors!) were fine in the Mark Brunell, Jimmy Smith, Tony Boselli, Fred Taylor era. Black is so 1970’s, Al Davis, Oakland Raider, collection of punks and outcasts. Black to me is the village idiot spiking his hair and dressing in all black to be a wanabe badass! Or worse Gothic, no thanks! I like the teal!

I like all black

But they have to wear teal for most games. Thats the tradition Weaver was talking about. They wore teal when they best the Broncos in 1996 and should wear them when they beat the Colts twice next year.

Good, let's be real, teal sucks

Though I do love saying “Fear the Teal” because all of my friends get a kick out of it bc it’s such poos color. Anyone who wants teal as a color over black should have their Jag fan card removed.

Did Bucs fans say “nah, the creamsickle orange is ours, wah, don’t change it to that badass charcoal grey. Creamsickles guys!”

This owner of ours is shrewd…

by JohnnyBiceps on Feb 3, 2012 7:39 PM EST reply actions

Teal is more original than black. And its been our identity and it’s the color of the seats in the stadium.

by ecuajags on Feb 3, 2012 7:51 PM EST up reply actions

How original is it, though? It was a trendy color in the 90’s, which is why virtually every expansion team in every sport’s main color was teal.

by Alfie Crow on Feb 4, 2012 8:45 AM EST up reply actions

That's like what 4 teams?

And 2 teams in the NFL. It’s a part of our history, and brings us back to our roots as a team founded in the 90s. We need to establish traditions here in Jacksonville not just change with the wind.

by ecuajags on Feb 4, 2012 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

That is a great way to look at it.

And people need to quit acting like it has been ELIMINATED, teal is still here.

by Ewdtrey on Feb 4, 2012 1:19 AM EST up reply actions

I'd steer away from any animal print.

I’d rather they incorporate flannel over animal print. I like the black with teal accent idea. I’d like to see a little gold infusion, even if on a subtle level. Not the mustard yellow either, that is not gold. I’m thinking gold foil like the Saints.

Flat black for the helmets also sounds cool.

Maybe...

Update the helmet to look as if the Jags logo is engraved into matte black finished helmet, revealing gold beneath the surface. Perhaps doing away with the teal tongue and white bits. Use the jersey to infuse the teal and white accents.

Picture the helmet, simply flat back carved with a logo to reveal a shining gold interior.
