34 NFL Teams

With NFL commish recently stating the NFL would rather go to 34 teams instead of moving, it got me wondering about how the divisions would work out.

Obviously one team would go to NFC/AFC, but which division? Anyone have a layout of divisions with 34 teams?

I would love the addition of 34 teams and would hate for any team to lose their team. It was nice to hear Goodell make that statement. It appears Khan had a talk with him and their is no plans to move Jaguars.

depends where the teams go by city

If LA gets 2, then both West divisions get a team and it’s 4-4-4-5. Remember pre expansion, the divisions were set up 5-5-4 (28 teams in the league after the Seattle/Tampa Bay expansion in ’76 with the AFC Central having 4 teams (PIT, CLE, CIN, HOU) and NFC West having 4 teams (NO, ATL, SF, LAR).

If it’s LA and London, I can see LA going to NFC West and London going AFC East.

I still feel that if the NFL does what they want and places a team in Europe, then the best way to do it is have 4 Euro teams and not just 1.

Then the league...

would have 36 teams, correct? That would make it much easier to sort out the divisions than just adding two. I agree, that would make much more sense.

I really dont think American football has enough of a following in Europe to support four teams. But maybe London Mexico Canada LA.

My thought is it does, but they are missing the target a bit

Khan made a brilliant point mentioning Hamburg, Germany and Ireland the other day. I feel that Germany, Spain and the Netherlands would do well with pro football, perhaps better than London.

It would be nice

if they would add a team in the 757, but that would never happen

VA Beach?

Certainly not. I could see Richmond in the future.

by CheapSeat on Feb 7, 2012 8:56 AM EST up reply actions

because NFL is more attractive

than a AAA baseball team. Richmond has a larger and more affluent metro population than Jax. Plus, a decent size city an hour in every direction. They could tap in to the VA Beach/Newport News, Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, and all of the Southern DC suburbs. It’s not implausible.

Snyder and Bisciotti would never allow it

It's so thick with people up there, though.

No one is having attendance/ratings issues. Did DC and Philly have a problem with the Ravens coming to town?

by CheapSeat on Feb 7, 2012 9:26 PM EST up reply actions

yes, the Redskins did

they wanted the whole territory after the Colts left and when the Ravens came.

Makes sense

Baltimore is only about 40 minutes from FedEx Field. But, the Skins and Ravens sell out every game without trying. The same would be true without any help from Virginia.

not sure where

but somewhere in the 757 is way better than richmond.

Just a couple names

Portland, Oregon

San Antonio, Texas

LA (could support two teams)

Toronto

Las Vegas (NFL might not like proximity to gambling)

San Antonio would likely not get in due to Dallas and Houston

What about Oklahoma City?

I couldn’t see Portland as I don’t see the owner of the Seahawks basically competing against his own market. Allen owns the Blazers, Sounders and Seahawks.

San An

There was talks years ago about Minnesota moving to San An when I lived there… musta been almost a decade now….

Anywho I dont think the Dallas and Houston markets would be a problem except the closeness of the cities… but there are plenty of folks in Texas (and future folks) that don’t have ties to the teams.

I know old Oiler fans that are still in limbo after the move to Tenn, they dont like Texans, hate Dallas and Tenn isn’t their state or whatever…

I think San Antonio would be a good placement for a team. OKC too, I like that idea, and it gives a team to that region without dropping another in TX.

I think Alabama (Birmingham maybe) would be a tough sell ever, between the misplaced Saints fans in lower Alabama to the college only fans of Northern Alabama.

I think Vegas should be targetted and the NFL shouldn’t worry about the gambling since they can’t control it anyway. It is what it is and the Vegas market from locals to visitors and one of the places the economy isn’t doing so bad would be a good place.

I hate the ideas of having the NFL in any other country, personally. Europe or Mexico especially. But as long as my Jags stay put, the NFL can do whatever.

LA

can’t even support one team unless it is contending for the Super Bowl every year.

by CheapSeat on Feb 8, 2012 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

I could only see Toronto & LA

And I wouldn’t be really confident with Toronto. LV is definatley a no-go for the reason you mentioned & Portland doesn’t have the surrounding wealth to make that happen. San Antonio could have the support but I doubt a 3rd team is preferable in Texas even though Florida has the same thing going on now.

I’ve heard possibilities of:

LA
Las Vegas (I doubt it)
Albuquerque, NM
Alabama
Kentucky

It's All good!

Kentucky?

…..The Kentucky Fried Chickens?

I guess if it were in Louisville, they’d be competing in the clots market… hard to make a fan base there unless the clots start stinking a lot.

The Louisville Bluegrassers?

The Bluegrassers?

That would be a horrible name. Hell, The Kentucky Fried Chickens sound better than that.
