2012 NFL Draft: Dre Kirkpatrick's Charges Could Be Dropped
Alabama defensive back Dre Kirkpatrick was arrested for marijuana possession back in the middle of January, but it looks like those charges could be dropped.
SBJ Labor & Agents: Brian Overstreet, agent for 'Bama CB Dre Kirkpatrick says he expects drug charges to be dropped soon. #NFLDraft

Kirkpatrick was originally arrested for possession of fewer than 20 grams of marijuana on Jan. 16 in Florida. As soon as the news hit, many Jacksonville Jaguars fans seemed to want to immediately write off Kirkpatrick, who's expected to be a potential Top 10 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, as a possibility for the Jaguars. Kirkpatrick looks like an attractive pick for the Jaguars because he seems to be a perfect blend of need at a position and value.
Kirkpatrick declared for the NFL Draft after winning the National Championship with Alabama his junior season. Many felt the arrest was going to hurt his draft stock, but it now looks as if it's just going to be another area NFL teams will need to investigate before pulling the trigger on drafting the talented cornerback.

Just curious...
do they even screen for pot in the NFL? Seems like the only ones who get tested are prior offenders. I never hear of any player failing a pot test. Percy Harvin hasn’t had any incidences since hes been a Viking. (except for withdrawal headaches)
He's probably
getting the headaches because stopped smoking lol

To be fair
most fan mocks had bumped him down to the Cowboys pick at #14…it wasn’t just Jaguars fans. Of course, there were entire BCC posts about why we wouldn’t take him. If Gene picks him; I’ll have every confidence that he is clean. Love it or hate it, our GM knows how to make the morality pick.
Decisions Decisions Decisions......
As a Alabama fan, i watched KirkPatrick the last couple years and he plays the game with a lot of emotion and it tends to get him in trouble at times. Saban has snatched him off the field on more than one occasion. Very good cover guy and tackler but I have also seen him get burned by garbage WR’s. Can he be a good cover corner? Maybe . Is he worth a top ten pick….probably not. See how a true Alabama fan ecaluated one of their own. Hint Hint……..
The only troubling thing
is that the story says he was in the car when the drugs were pruchased, but he didn’t know what was bought.
Weed is the least incriminating thing his friend could have been buying from a dealer. It could have just as easily been cocaine. That was a terrible decision. I know the story was supposed to make it seem like less of a big deal…but it makes him sound dumber. I think weed would not be such a big deal. I think staying in the car with unnamed drugs while your friend is driving on the wrong side of the road (because he was high)…is a big deal.
If that's the only uh-oh on his record, it wouldn't worry me much.
This just in: college kids smoke a little herb now and then.
if he's the best player available
I still wouldn’t mind if the Jaguars drafted him

Whether or not he gets charged is secondary.
What the incident shows is a lack of maturity and an inability to make good decisions. Part of that is youth, but if you’re told that keeping yourself out of trouble over the next 3 months will help you earn several million dollars more, you should think twice before getting into a car with a guy who is going to be buying drugs. That saying that nothing good happens after 12AM is doubly true for guys going though the draft process. So basically putting yourself in that situation shows either incredible arrogance or terrible decision making skills. Neither is the kind of quality that makes a potential employer want to fork over millions of dollars.
You're right,
what this shows is that a young kid who is still in college made a poor decision and a lack of maturity, tell me the part that is supposed to be a surprise?

i know that marijuana is bad
but i really don’t see why everybody seems to make such a big deal about it. i don’t smoke, but i go to a really good school (not private, and i don’t want to mention my school’s name, but we’re the best school in jacksonville easily and we’re considered a “clean and nerdy” school) and i’m a freshman and quite a few freshmen smoke, as do sophomores and juniors, but nearly every senior smokes. and at other schools like DA (yes, the music school) and sandalwood the people that smoke is a majority… i’m pretty sure that nearly every athlete smokes, just not necessarily a lot.
Again
the issue is not necessarily “the smoking.” They were driving on the wrong side of the road with weed in the car. It could be presumed that (at least) the driver was high. The bad decisions in this plausible situation are numerous.
Buy the weed. Go home. Blaze up. The chances of being caught or charged in this situation are slim.
In the three most important months of his life…he couldn’t keep from getting caught. Bad decision. That being said…I’d still be fine if we drafted him.

For comparison:
I graduated from Terry Parker HS in ‘93 and UF in ’97. I never saw marijuana even once (I was in honors and AP classes). I am sure there were a few smoking it in HS, but I was never around it (It would be interesting to get someone elses recollection who was in the ’standard’ classes at the same time.). To this day, I have only seen marijuana in person once. I do remember hearing of ‘acid’ a couple of times in HS. Alcohol was commom, of course.
Your report is very sad to me.

haaaaaa!
have you seen ANY statistics lately regaurding who has tried or still smokes marijuana in the 16-30 yr old range?
I too was in AP and the “gifted classes” all through highschool and took hard courses in college. Four years later and only a general AA to show..thanks to Mary J.
But i regress, the non smokers are no big majority, if at all
I say
He is a college student who was most likely celebrating the fact he that all of the hard work he put in was to going lead him to being a sure thing in the top 10 picks in this draft. This guys got the ability to shut down a whole side of one field, which is something we need with mathis likely gone and a healthy Andre Johnoson and Kenny Britt.
