Wide Receivers in Free Agency...Who do the Jags Go After?

It is vital that the Gene Smith add impact players around Gabbert. The wide receiving core was mediocre at best. Wide Receiver is a position that the Jaguars will need to address in free agency. With the 7th overall pick in the draft the Jaguars will not have a chance to draft Justin Blackmon and 7 is too high for the other wide receivers in the draft. There are several free agent wide receivers that can help the Jaguars.

Here’s a list of the top potential wide receiver free agents that I can see the Jaguars pursuing.

  • DeSean Jackson (PHI) The Eagles will not be bringing back Jackson. Having a down year may have made him a little more affordable. One of the fastest WRs in the NFL he can stretch any defense.
  • Dwayne Bowe (KC) Bowe had a subpar season, however he can be a legitimate number one receiver. He is physical and he can get deep.
  • Marques Colston (NO) Colston is a big physical WR that is not afraid to go across the middle. Colston runs good routes and doesn’t drop many passes. The Saints will try to resign Colston.
  • Robert Meachem (NO) Meachem is a good downfild threat with good hands. I don’t think the Saints will be able to resign Colston and Meachem.
  • Mario Manningham (NYG) With Victor Cruz emerging as one of Manning’s favorite targets Manningham is expendable. Manningham is a physical WR that can go deep. Does dorp some balls and get sloppy on his routes.
  • Harry Douglas (ATL) Douglas is a solid slot receiver with speed to burn. Playing in Mularky’s offence in Atlanta make him a good prospect for the Jags.

There are other free agent wide receiver options available for the Jaguars. Given Gene Smith’s history I don’t see the Jags going after the head cases like Steve Johnson and Vincent Jackson. The good news for Jaguar fans, is that Shahid Khan wants to make a splash and spend to the cap. What better way to make a splash than signing DeSean Jackson and Mario Manningham?

Realistically...

The Saints are going have problems signing all of their FA’s so Colston looks to be a real possibility. Then maybe a Manningham or a Douglas.

If Steve Johnson and Vincent Jackson....

are head cases, what does that make DeSean Jackson?

by Jaggernaut on Feb 8, 2012 9:40 AM EST reply actions

Exactly

Colston and Bowe are the only big names that fit the bill. I don’t see Bowe breaking free from KC. We are going to have to pay Colston.

by CheapSeat on Feb 9, 2012 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

Colston

I would like to see a big WR like Colston and then a guy who can really get deep like Douglas, Bowe, or Manningham.

by Jagjesse on Feb 8, 2012 10:13 AM EST reply actions

I would be very surprised if D-Jax and Bowe make it to FA.

I expect their teams to do whatever it takes to retain them.

by muddyballs on Feb 8, 2012 11:59 AM EST up reply actions

At first i like Vincent Jackson

But more i look at it Colstons lookin like the top guy. Id prefer Dwayne Bowe but he looks like hes goin to stay put. I think harry douglass comes over with mularkey wouldnt be suprised if they talked about it before he was hired.

by jager-lota on Feb 8, 2012 12:23 PM EST reply actions

I wish Bowe does hit FA

It not likely tho, ive been reading up on Bowe. KC and his camp have been working on a deal since the season ended, KC is 30 million under the cap and need to resign Carr also
so expect KC to sign one tag the other. The most realistic options are Colston/Meachem(NO cant sign both),Douglas,VJax, Wayne,Berrian,Edwards, and everybody’s fav Manningham.

he is not a serious option

All this fantasy football WR......

Crap has to go we are not getting 2 big name WRs in FA, it wont happen and yes after the super bowl Manningham is a a top tier Wr in FA now. We go hard after 1 top tier Wr and sign a second or third tier Wr. I really hope Gene is smart enuff to see we need a WR in the draft for the 1st rd, and the only option is Blackmon, if he drops pass STL i would trade a 2013 2nd round and the #7 with the Bucs to get him. We need home grown talent because we have none on offense(except MJD).

Blackmon is a rangy WR who will fight for the ball, imagine Dez Bryant without the knucklehead tendencies a bookworm for football.

by Tye4934 on Feb 9, 2012 7:53 PM EST reply actions

Blackmon might be one of the worse picks at 7

he is not good enough to warrant the #7 pick. It is that simple!!!

if they sign a top tier wr along with another 2nd/3rd tier guy...

they’d have no reason for such a desperate move come draft time. To expect Blackmon to make such a dramatic impact is silly, as is thinking a wr would make more of an impact than a pass rusher. Going to have a tough time beating teams with elite qbs if they are going to be comfortable in the pocket. Example just this past season, Jags lost to the Saints, and the Rams were able to beat them.

by uclatroy on Feb 9, 2012 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

What i was saying is if we dont land a top FA

we need to trade up to get Blackmon because unless we break the bank we are not landing Vjax or Colston because lets face it Jax is not a place a FA WR who wants a big contract wants to come because or our history, thats why i said lets just get a home grown WR in the draft.I think Blackmon will make a impact very quickly and Coples is not that great of a pass rusher anways hes a bull rusher and he is a reach at #7 i would re-sign Mincey and Roth because they got pressure also and thats just as important as sacks. We were fine on defense what was our main problem as a football team???? points… we had no scoring threats nobody who can get open and get to the endzone. There is no way i would take a DE #7 when we had no offense to speak of outside of MJD.

by Tye4934 on Feb 9, 2012 11:27 PM EST up reply actions

Blackmon is more of a reach at 7 than Coples is...

no way would I endorse trading up for Blackmon. If they are so desperate, take Kendall Wright at #7, even if Blackmon is there.

@troycarson

by uclatroy on Feb 9, 2012 11:46 PM EST up reply actions

In every mock Blackmon is no lower then 6th overall

How is he a reach? best WR in the draft by far and hes a reach at #7 and i like Wright but is he a top 10 pick??? i guarantee Blackmon is.

by Tye4934 on Feb 10, 2012 1:58 AM EST up reply actions

Every mock?

Must not be looking at many of them, not that they are even relevant to where a player should be drafted. People view him as some elite prospect, which he isn’t. And yes, Wright would be more worthy of the pick, imo. But really, with how deep this WR class is, it is best that they go OT/CB/DE at #7.

by uclatroy on Feb 10, 2012 5:20 AM EST up reply actions

A few years ago Aaron Curry was "the safest pick in the daft"

Meaning he was least likely to be a bust. Oakland traded a 7th rounder for him. A lot of people (including myself) don’t see Blackmon as a top 10 talent

Jeffrey Can't Run

Jeffrey might be there in the 2nd round, but the rumor is he can’t run NFL type routes.

by Jagjesse on Feb 13, 2012 11:47 AM EST up reply actions

And big name wrs don't want to come because of the Jags history?

if they open up their wallet, almost any will come here. Just have to hope some of the top tier guys make it to FA.

by uclatroy on Feb 9, 2012 11:50 PM EST up reply actions

Yes the Jags are a run first team......

with a very raw QB, and a bad team ppl outside of jax really dont see this as a attractive spot for FAs, so if we get into a bidding war with other teams who might a Top tier FA Wr pick first???

by Tye4934 on Feb 10, 2012 2:06 AM EST up reply actions

We're very attractive spot for free agents my friend

No state income tax, great weather year round, one of the cheapest real estate cities in the United States , being the main guy and most importantly a QB who has the ability to make every throw on a NFL level.

$$$$$$$$$$

by kungfuman104 on Feb 10, 2012 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

Manningham

is DEFINITELY NOT a Top Tier WR.

He only had 39 catches for 523 yds and 4 TD’s. Sure, he made one big catch in the Super Bowl. Even Tiquan Underwood makes a big catch now and then. That doesn’t make him a top tier WR.

by pksiv on Feb 10, 2012 10:04 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

But I still thin he’d be a quality #2, definitely not worth #1 money

by kungfuman104 on Feb 10, 2012 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

HA!!!

Why so we can get Coples or a Big ugly and go thru another 5-11 season because our QB has no one to throw the damn ball to, i wasnt a DG fan but all those sacks he took wasnt because he didnt know where to go with the ball, it was because THERE WAS NO ONE OPEN!! same with Gabba. If i was in the pocket and seen what blaine was seeing downfield
i would run for my life too

by Tye4934 on Feb 9, 2012 8:10 PM EST reply actions

It doesnt matter if he is or not

Every team who needs a Wr is gonna treat him like one and his price is gonna go up once teams start bidding for him

by Tye4934 on Feb 9, 2012 8:12 PM EST reply actions

If a lot of the top guys resign

then the Jags should grab a Meachem/Manningham or both. Also we could always try and sign Wayne to a two or three year deal and gradually fix the position. We can find another guy next year a well. If we can realistically get two good starting caliber receivers then that is a success. We don’t have to have great receivers, but we can definitely find some good ones.

by Dwalk1217 on Feb 9, 2012 9:46 PM EST reply actions

This...

is what I’ve thought all along. Get Meachem and Wayne and let Reggie fill that #2 void until we can address it with a long term solution in another draft.

by kjones407 on Feb 10, 2012 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

I honestly think

if we brought in a TRUE #1 WR – a guy like Bowe – then one of the guys we have could step up and be a very good #2. Everyone will get better as Blaine improves and if the best DB on the field is covering the #1.

by pksiv on Feb 10, 2012 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

I like this train of thought.

I was always concerned about too much money being tied up in the position because of the nature of free agency and having to overpay for players. I’d be more content with Gene breaking the bank on one superstar and drafting a guy, than going for 2-3 guys in free agency.

by kjones407 on Feb 10, 2012 9:45 PM EST up reply actions

NA BRA

We pickup Manningham and Meachem , then we pickup Mcnutt in the draft …….At #7 with our first pick , we pickup Coples and pair him up with Mario Williams ……. It’s called Dominating once again baby …….And just like that we battle those punk Texans for the AFC South Title in 2012 ……..It’s JAGS TIME son !!!

I agree except..

instead of manningham get colston. I would love to have mario here and coples on the other side. Our line would be the best in the league.

Dammit just go out there and play to win and I'll be here to cheer!!!!

There is no way in hell we get Mario

Mario gonna want a 5 year deal at prob about 15-18 mill a year this fantasy football stuff is funny every team in the league with any cap space is gonna want this guy look what Peppers get when he was a free agent 6yr 92 million i wouldnt hold my breath on Mario

by Tye4934 on Feb 9, 2012 11:45 PM EST reply actions

And

How much cap space do we have? He was saying spend a little less on WR and pick up Williams instead. We have the cap room for this.

Dammit just go out there and play to win and I'll be here to cheer!!!!

by Vegasjags on Feb 10, 2012 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

Remember Now

we have to Resign Lowery (5-6 mil a year) Mincey (maybe 7 mill a year) throw money at a big time FA WR (9-11 Mill a year) a second tier WR(4-6 mill a year) and give Williams what he wants (15-18 mill a year) and sign Draft picks with us being 30 million dollars under the cap

by Tye4934 on Feb 10, 2012 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

they get Williams, I doubt they’d keep Mincey. Top tier wr a priority, if they land one they could just try to find some bargain player to bring in along with him. Price you have for Lowery seems a bit high, but we’ll see. You also don’t mention signing a cb. Also Scobee. Then factor in cutting Kampman. The point is though, they have plenty of financial flexibility.

if we are gonna waste money..

we should waste(gamble) money on a wr that we dont already have..we have plenty of wrs that are small, quick and ineffective. if you look at all these small-mid size wrs that are up for grabs (jackson, manningham, douglas, johnson), the one thing they share is an above average qb. if you were to pair mike thomas with brees, manning, vick or ryan he would put up the same numbers as these guys if not better. i say throw the sink at vincent jackson. i do not like colston, i dont think he would be effective with a subpar qb like gab. bowe would be my second choice. if we dont resign mincey and roth and take harvey, um i mean couples at 7 i will be highly upset. if anything, ide like to see a trade down get jeffery or floyd since gene has a knack for getting decent talent in the later rounds….p.s. anyone remember what taylor price did to us in the preseason last year?…im just sayin..

Desean Jackson

Has more talent in this left pinky toe then Mike Thomas has in his whole body.

Not saying we sign Jackson, but to say Thomas would do what Jackson does in Philly is beyond moronic.

Jackson with Blackmon, wright, jeffery, or floyd would be a great #1 and #2

by bdk790 on Feb 10, 2012 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

jackson had 58 catches and 4 tds in 2011..thomas had 66 catches and 4 tds in 2010 with a worst quarterback. he posted a faster 40 in his combine too so i wouldnt say that.

by tellitlikeitistc on Feb 10, 2012 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

THIS!!!

Couples is not a pass rusher they said all the same things about Harvey and look at him Couples is a solid DE why would u waste #7 on a solid DE i have seen the film on Couples and u know what i see…. SLOW!!! this guy is no Aldon Smith.

Meachem would be a great pickup tho in my mind, he could turn into a great number 2 cuz he can get open add Blackmon or Bowe (praying KC lets him walk) im good

by Tye4934 on Feb 10, 2012 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

I think your wrong

just on one point. I don’t think Gabbert is subpar I just think he doesn’t have around him what other QB’s do. With the exception of manning and brady every other great QB has good WR depth around him which we do not have. Look at the giants, packers, and saints receiving corps they are all loaded.

Dammit just go out there and play to win and I'll be here to cheer!!!!

by Vegasjags on Feb 10, 2012 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

gabs season last year was among the worst in nfl history. i like him. hes big and has all the tools but until he plays above the level of worst in the league, he will continue to be sub par..i do believe with the right playcalling, coaching, and more than one good wr he will be just fine..

by tellitlikeitistc on Feb 10, 2012 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

Desean Jackson has issues just like Stevie Johnson, except i think Jackson’s got more of an ego while Johnson’s biggest problem i saw was his excessive celebration which is more fixable than a guys ego. As for Manningham, after hauling in that big catch to help keep the Giants rolling down the field to score what was the game winning TD id be shocked if the Giants release him. I agree that the Saint will have problems with Offensive MVP Drew Brees becoming a FA as well as a couple other, so i’d be surprise if the can afford both Colston and Meachem, which ever is cheaper could be the one that stays.

Personally id like Stevie Johnson as the #1 someone like Reggie Wayne as the #2. Look at the stats you see a lot of things that don’t help his case but the best stat is that he is the only WR who can challenge the best corner in the league, Darrell Revis. Constantly in their 2 meetings every year Johnson found a way to beat Revis, something no other receiver has been able to do and seeing as the Jets are usually a contender in the playoffs its a chance to take a shot on someone who could help take care of them. As for Wayne he still has a little gas left in the tank and can come relevantly cheaply. Even with Dan Orlovisky and Painter throwing to him he still managed to have decent numbers.

With those two you are talking about Thomas going back to being the #3 receiver where he was able to make plays which probably has a lot to do with the drop off performance from 2010, he was not meant to be a #1. Then you keep Cecil Shorts who can learn some and has the potential to fill in if Thomas gets hurt or in a 5 WR set. All the other receivers should be cut.

by only jags fan in orange on Feb 10, 2012 9:28 PM EST reply actions

taylor price..

is better and has way more potential than shorts. id like to see him stay.
