Around SBN: L'Equipe Claims He's Coming To Chelsea On Five Year Deal

Think we can get him? Routt is out in OAK:

Per Adam Schefler,

"the Raiders have announced that they have cut CB Stanford Routt, who last year signed a five-year, $54.5 million contract that included $20 million guaranteed."

Star-divide

Do you think Khan and all of his Mularkey will have a chance to persuade him to come to Duval County? Just thinking, with him just getting $20 million plus his salary last year, he may not be asking for an equally large contract and we most definitely have a need at CB....

BCC, what do you think?

Please don't

He was the most penalized CB in the NFL last year, yet he gets paid like a superstar? Pass.

by jagzman04 on Feb 9, 2012 10:03 PM EST reply actions

He's the most penalized corner in the league b/c he played man to man in the upper 90 percentile of plays. Same reason the Jets always had so many pass interference penalties...

There is a such thing as a “good penalty”…

Not really "sudden"...Al Davis was known to be pretty loyal to his players that he brought in...now that Al's gone the new regime wants to do things their way...

a few large contracts deleted allows them to start fresh. Big overhaul coming in Oakland…

bottom line..

is that he’s better than any of our cb’s and adding him would be an upgrade. if he’s considering buffalo there’s no reason he shouldn’t consider Jacksonville.

Routt...

is better than all of our CB’s? By who’s standards?

by kjones407 on Feb 10, 2012 10:47 AM EST up reply actions

oh stop..

routt is a legit starter on most teams right now except nyj, pit and phi..mathis is the equivalent to a used chevy impala from the late 90’s with over 100,000 miles on it. sure he can get you there but odds are he’s gonna break down again at some point. cox did show signs of life this past year but how many teams would he start for? not many..middleton needs room to grow as does issac(where ever they decide to play him) as for the host of guys we signed off the street towards the end of the season, i doubt any of them will be back this year. the fact that we finished 6th in d with such poor db play and depth blows my mind…good luck with the arena league youboty.

by tellitlikeitistc on Feb 10, 2012 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

Are you serious bro

Derek cox would start on every team and so would Mathis

by fan7 on Feb 10, 2012 11:05 AM EST up reply actions

good is a stretch..

mathis is too much of a queston mark with his age and injury..i may be a lil hard on cox but he hasnt shown that hes anywhere near top tier. we also have zero depth. drafting a kirpatrick would make sense if our offense wasnt crap.

by tellitlikeitistc on Feb 10, 2012 11:22 AM EST up reply actions

Good is definitly not a stretch

When Derek Cox was in the game are defense played a whole lot better, but I agree with you on Rashean Mathis he is a question mark, and also from what I have read is that Routt is overrated

by fan7 on Feb 10, 2012 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

up until his injury. To discredit that is shortsighted and naive.

because The Raiders didn’t think he was worth $5M ? When elite CB’s are getting $12M+/year ?

elite?

noone said he was elite. i said he is better than any of our cbs and lets face it, oak doesnt make the best choices in personnel. just look at how they handled mr. jackson and the palmer trade. you never know what happens behind the scenes.

they’re by your standards. Then nevermind, this conversation is pointless.

by kjones407 on Feb 10, 2012 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

my standards..

and stats, and common sense. you cant be a homer all the time.

by tellitlikeitistc on Feb 10, 2012 11:27 AM EST up reply actions

I wasn't being a homer...

because I know nothing about Routt, so you saying`by stats and common sense doesn’t apply to me. I’ve never heard Routt being brought up as one of the better corners in the league when I occasionally listen to the talking heads of the football world. There are also some stats that say Mathis and Cox were a good starting duo, so for you to just say Routt is better than every corner on this team prompted me to ask my question. They also passed the eye ball test from what I seen. You’d think Routt is better than Middleton, the reserves we signed due to injury and especially Isaac, considering none of them were originally the #1 corner of their team and much less experienced in the league. So I’m not sure why you’d even make that comparison. You said it blows your mind we finished 6th in defense with such pourous DB play, when truthfully Cox, Lowery, Landry, Mathis and Coleman made a nice group of starting DB’s to start the year. Good enough to help us be Top 5 in overall defense at one point in the year, just to finish 6th with a host of reserves. That says a hell of a lot about the starters and the reserves if you ask me.

Back to Routt, I say if Mathis and Middleton are both resigned and recover fully, I doubt he’d take the starting position from Cox or Mathis and I think Middleton would put up a good fight for his spot in the rotation. With that being said, I doubt he is as good as you are making him out to be considering he’d have to take a starter spot from two damn good football players. The only X factor here is the injury history of Cox, Mathis and Middleton.

by kjones407 on Feb 10, 2012 7:53 PM EST up reply actions

Good enough to help us be a Top 5 defense at one point, just to finished 6th with mostly reserves as starters and rotation players. I’d say that’s a true testament to the depth Gene was able to sign.

Back to Routt, I say if Mathis and Middleton were to return and fully recover, Routt wouldn’t take a starter position from Cox or Mathis and Middleton would put up a good fight for his place in the rotation. With that being said, I don’t think Routt is as good as you are making him out to be. The only X factor here is the injury history of Mathis, Cox and Middleton.

by kjones407 on Feb 10, 2012 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

again...

routt put up better numbers than mathis and cox both combined for last season, as did pozlonsky(who is a lb if you forgot)..middleton will never be an effective starter, he will be an average sub at best. we all know coleman is a good nickel but average on the edges. i don’t see why everyone has such a hard on for cox. he’s only had ONE good season. i think cox has a great character but i think your forgetting how he got benched in his second year for poor play and as had zero picks in the last two years..hardly good numbers..don’t get me wrong, i hope he steps it up this year and stays healthy but if he doesn’t, then you have to start thinking about other options or we will end up in the same spot as last year. those options start by drafting good competition and bringing in experienced guys. routts numbers indicate that he is more productive than both our starters right now..lets be honest, mathis is on the way down he’s 32 with a acl injury playing the position that requires the most speed and lateral movement. when you factor that in we really have one ‘legit’ starter in cox whose performance has been questionable since his rookie year. i dont think im being irrational. lowery and landry are great and i do like coleman as our nickel however, we absolutely need to address the edges.

by tellitlikeitistc on Feb 11, 2012 2:12 AM EST up reply actions

It depends on:

What we want our corners to do. If we intend to run a lot of man coverages that we should look at him. But if we are running a lot of zone we may want to pass. You would be surprised how many corners in this league cant do both.

by GRSJags on Feb 10, 2012 10:53 AM EST up reply actions

i agree

however you need at least one shut down man cb..cox is decent at both.

by tellitlikeitistc on Feb 10, 2012 11:03 AM EST up reply actions

I'm still confused

if he’s really that great a CB, then paying him $5M for the seasons isn’t a big deal.

by pksiv on Feb 10, 2012 9:58 AM EST reply actions

Why ?

CB’s as good as a few people think this guy is are worth a lot more than $5M/year.

by pksiv on Feb 10, 2012 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

becuase

in a new regime you want your guys… and money is money no matter how cheap we feel the cost is.

If the new regime wants to run cover 2 and is not good at it, then trade or cut him and bring in the people that can.

by GRSJags on Feb 10, 2012 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

this guys was worth 10.9 mill to al david

it is only 5 guaranteed. if he remained on the team it would have been jusst about 11 mill Oakland would of had to pay him so you have to view him as an 11 million a year talent, not a 5 mill a year guy.

i wish..

finnigan will command a super huge contract and will want that contract to be with a sexy team..however, afc south without manning will be the worst qb division in football wich might seem pretty sexy to a cb. heres a thought..andre johnson hits him up on face book and invites him to houston and he ends up with 10 ints in the division.

stats dont lie..

last year routt had sported the lowest completion rating of any cb targeted at least 60 times in the nfl at 47%. he had career highs of 4 picks and 15 pass deflections. cox had 0 picks and 2 deflections. mathis had 1 pick and 2 deflections. do the math.

by tellitlikeitistc on Feb 10, 2012 12:36 PM EST reply actions

here's a stat you may not have been aware of

Only 2 teams threw for over 300 yards on the Jaguars last year: New Orleans and Tennessee in their 2nd game.

and since they were backing them up, then Cox and Mathis must be better, you know, but hey thats just common sense

Sorry if I insulted you

by calling you Stanford Routt.

You judge our corners assuming we have the same type of pass rush that Oakland has. Richard Seymour is far better a pass rusher than anyone currently on our roster.

wrong again..

mincey had twice as many tackles and 2 more sacks than seymor this year. :)

by tellitlikeitistc on Feb 10, 2012 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

our d-line when healthy is one of the best in the league. if we should praise back ups on any part of our team its the d-line..mincey wasnt a starter at the start of the season. lane showed progress and chick and douzable stepped up as well.

by tellitlikeitistc on Feb 10, 2012 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

If thats the case

then common sense would say they don’t need to worry about a CB at all, the front 7 can just “hold it down” next season

by Sylvester.The.Jaguar.fan on Feb 11, 2012 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

Not saying he worth a look or not but..

But having the lowest completion percentage is nice and all but does this make the guy better than what we have or for that matter a good CB.

I mean if you want to “do the math” and just use statistics to determine weather someone should be signed by us.. how about this…

“Routt is a decent player, but he is probably best suited to be a No. 2 cornerback. He was better playing alongside Asomugha than he was as the team’s No. 1 corner. Routt was solid in coverage, but was penalized 17 times and gave up eight touchdowns, tied for the second-highest total in the NFL last season” By Bill Williamson

by GRSJags on Feb 10, 2012 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

agreed.

i didnt say he was elite. the fact that his numbers were better with asomugha indicates that he plays well when getting picked on..you left out the 6 yards per reception stat..mathis has a huge downside and cox’s best season was his first..in jax routt could very easily be a 1..not the answer by any means tho.

by tellitlikeitistc on Feb 10, 2012 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

mcfadden

steelers cut bryant mcfadden…that wouldnt be a bad pick up either..he could add some depth and experience.

by tellitlikeitistc on Feb 10, 2012 3:22 PM EST reply actions

I'll...

…offer him no more then 7 Mill a year, he had a solid year, but led the league in penalties, with I believe 22. Bryant Mcfadden would be a cheap solid pickup, but Routt and Cox would be close to elite.

last year...

our starting dbs were nice(considering mathis’ health) but a secondary with routt, cox, coleman, lowery and landry would be ridiculous..factor in the depth of mathis, mcfadden, prosinski, and middleton…then all of a sudden we would have arguably the best secondary in the afc(minus nyj and pit)

by tellitlikeitistc on Feb 11, 2012 2:18 AM EST reply actions

As much as I’d like someone to replace Ashton Youboty, I really wouldn’t want the most penalized player in the league in exchange.

But if push comes to shove, I guess we can hope that our coaches can straighten him out and make him more disciplined.
