Every year I extensively follow the pre-draft process, watch bowl games and watch extensive amounts of game cut ups. And every year I seem to fall in love with several prospects, usually picking the underdog type 2-7th round players. This year is no different; here are some of my favorites:
DT Mike Martin - Michigan
6’2" 304lbs
Projected round: 2-4
Probably my favorite sleeper pick for the Jaguars. I really liked what I saw from him during Senior Bowl week, and his game cut ups show an ability to hold the point and is a violent player capable of supplying adequate pressure.
WR Juron Criner – Arizona
6’2" 225lbs
Projected round: 2-4
I believe he has the best set of hands in the draft, barely ahead of Alshon Jeffery. I have read that there is some kind of mental health issue of some kind, the article was very vague. But, I love his route running, often embarrassing CBs on double moves. He was highly productive, and his only real deficiency is speed.
WR Marvin Jones – California
6’3" 200lbs
Projected round: 2-3
I would describe his game as elite at nothing (although he has the best body control of any WR in this draft), but good at all facets. I think he will be a productive #3 type WR and play for a long time in the NFL.
WR Brian Quick – Appalachian State
6’4" 220lbs
Projected round: 2-3
Another astonishing measurement of his are his arms (34 ¼), which he uses to snag jump balls and maintain balance on one memorable highlight where he ran like a 3-legged animal into the end zone once being knocked off balance. Good speed and hands are why I love his potential as a possession receiver.
OT Mitchell Schwartz – California
6’5" 318lbs
Projected round: 2-3
I think he could be a steal for the Jaguars in round 3. I think he is highly underrated and would come in and start day 1 at Right Tackle. Mitchell dominated at left tackle in the Senior Bowl as well as in almost any cut up you put on. I think if some team likes him as much I do he could be one of those shockers at the end of the first round like Eric Wood a few years ago. He and Bobbie Massie (Ole Miss) are universally underrated by many fans.
DT Derek Wolfe – Cincinnati
6’5" 295lbs
Projected round: 2-4
He, like Mike Martin, is a DT who can do everything. He is an energy player who plays violently. His name has come up recently in draft talks as a guy who is rising because he is a very explosive player at times. I believe someone tweeted that they hear someone refer to him as a guy who could be an "Alualu" type pick, but I don’t see that type of ability that would get him into the first round.
DE Nick Perry – USC
6’3" 271lbs
Projected round: 1-2
My favorite DE, whom I have pounded the table for in prior discussions. I think he is more explosive than any other pass rusher in this draft, and uses his hands better than any other DE in this class. His run stopping abilities are poor, but I think he fits well as a 4-3 RE who specializes at 3rd down pass rushing. One issue I have are inconsistency and bad tape against Schwartz, but he beat Jonathon Martin, a first round tackle, like a drum several times in his game against Stanford.
DE Vinny Curry – Marhsall
6’3" 266lbs
Projected round: 1-2
I think Curry is a very good pass rusher, much like Perry, who struggles in the run game. He too profiles as a 4-3 RE specializing on rushing the passer. As Charlie Casserly describes him, he has "natural pass rushing abilities". He is raw but talented, and his poor combine numbers are not telling of his explosiveness.
CB Dwight Bentley – Louisiana- Lafayette
5’10" 182lbs
Projected round: 2-3
Really was outstanding at the Senior Bowl, and likely the standout of the practices as a cover corner. Not ideal size but is an aggressive cover guy who showed an ability to stick to the hips of a strong WR group at practices in Mobile.
CB Jamell Fleming – Oklahoma
5’11 206lbs
Projected round: 2-4
A very physical and aggressive corner, which I had as high as a late first rounder in February, but one who I have cooled off on and moved him back into the early 3rd round area. I don’t think he is a very likely pick for the Jaguars, but his physicality stood out from the others at the corner back position.
TE Coby Fleener – Stanford
6’6" 247lbs
Projected round: 1-2
He is my favorite out of the TE group, because he is more capable of blocking than Orson Charles or Dwayne Allen, which is necessary to be a TE in our running scheme. He has good hands and was Andrew Luck’s favorite target. He would be a good pick at 38 for the Jaguars, if he makes it.
DE Jared Crick - Nebraska
6'6" 285lbs
Projected round: 2-4
Reminds me a lot of JJ Watt, can play inside and out and will play all out every play. He shows strength and explosiveness. If the Jaguars were to pick him, he could play both LE and DT on passing downs.
Others:
Isaiah Pead, David Wilson, Fletcher Cox, Bobbie Massie, Bernard Pierce, David DeCastro and Trent Richardson.
