Jaguars Offseason Review: Running Back

With the majority of the offseason in the books, at least with NFL free agency and the NFL Draft, we can start to look at the Jacksonville Jaguars position by position and see what we can begin looking for when training camp rolls around. One position there doesn't seem to much much worry over is the running back position, and there is a good reason why that's the case. Let's take a look at the running back position, and for sake of laziness I have including fullback in this list.

Returning Players

Maurice Jones-Drew - There's not much to be said about Jones-Drew. He led the NFL in rushing last season coming off an MCL injury and with the worst passing offense in the NFL. He's currently skipping out on OTAs looking for a new deal, but he'll be there when the practices become mandatory.

Rashad Jennings - Jennings is coming back from a knee surgery that ended his 2011 season before it started. There was talk Jennings could have been ready to play by mid-season, but the team opted to put him on injured reserve and he was definitely missed.

Greg Jones - Greg Jones is Greg Jones. He's one of the best blocking fullbacks in the NFL and is also a very good special teamer. He's a bit on the bubble because of his salary, but until the Jaguars don't have to lean on the running game he's an asset.

Montell Owens - Owens is one of the league's best special teams players and should continue to be so in 2012. He's shown a little bit of ability with the ball in his hand, but primarily has been a special teamer.

Brock Bolen - Bolen has become a bit of a fan favorite as he's not a "traditional" fullback. He's adequate lead blocking but struggles a bit in pass pro. What he does offer however is a nice ability to catch the football out of the backfield.

Richard Murphy - Murphy showed some ability last camp and preseason, but did make the final 53 and wound up on injured reserve.

Du'Juan Harris - Harris wound up making the Jaguars practice squad last season and was called up late in the season to the active roster. Harris has shown some ability both running the football between the tackles and catching the football.

Lost Players

Deji Karim - Karim was the only back the Jaguars lost, as he was released early in the offseason. Karim did a good job returning kicks in his rookie year but was forced into primary back up roll last season and struggled a bit.

New Players

Naufahu Tahi - Tahi has been in the NFL for a few seasons, recently playing with the Minnesota Vikings from 2006-2010. Tahi was not on a roster for the 2011 season and made the team after a veteran workout during Jaguars rookie mini-camp.

Jalen Parmele - Parmele has bounced around the NFL as a return man.
