So I woke up from my Sunday post-church nap to see a text message from a friend and fellow Jaguar die-hard. The message read, "Blackmon arrested for aggravated DUI". My initial thoughts were disbelief, followed by anger and disappointment. As the reality of the incident has set in, I've become saddened and discouraged. This season was hopefully going to be the start of a new era. An era of consistent winning, playoff appearances, and hopefully an eventual Super Bowl trophy. Things looked promising with the hiring of Mularkey and his staff. Not a big splash, but true fans are very optimistic. They have a great track record working with young QBs and receivers, and transforming them into not only viable NFL starters, but pretty good ones at that.
Unfortunately, this is already shaping up to be a terrbile offseason. First, Pot Roast gets his head smashed with a bottle and almost loses his eye. Memories of Big Richard Collier instantly came to mind when I heard the news. Thankfully, things appear to be progressing in a positive way. Then the front office has another questionable draft. Trading up in round 1 for a receiver, when the best CB was on the board and a likley comparable receiver could have been had in round 2, maybe even round 3. Then punching all Jaguar fans straight in the gut by drafting a punter in round 3. There are no words to justify this pick to me, and Gene Smith only added to the frustration by telling us that Bryan Anger is a "starter". We follow and understand football Gene. A punter is not a starter. Don't insult our intelligence. Next, our best player, and one of the leaders on the team, wants more money, and could be a potential distraction with a training camp holdout. Never a good thing. However, optimism remained for me... until today. The receiver we needed, wanted, and hoped would turn into a star gets busted for drunk driving. Again. He will be suspended for a few games this season and has proven himself to be a terrible decision maker, as this is his second DUI. Never a good thing, but making it worse was his level of intoxication. He wasn't just buzzed or typsy... kid was WASTED! .24 is stupid high. You have to drink A LOT to get those numbers. This tells me he doesn't know or have a limit, and he might have a drinking problem, making it that much more likely he'll have to "learn and grow, and use better judgment" down the road. I hope I am wrong.
As a long time fan of the Jaguars, I am tired of defending this team to those who look at this organization as a joke. I will cheer for them no matter who the coach is, who is under center, who the GM is, or how terrible their record might be. I will continue to love them until the day they leave the city. I hope that day never comes. But just once I wish this team would make national news for something great on the field.
