Jaguars WR questions

Going into the oncoming football season, the Jaguars are looking at a revamped receiving corp. that has been drastically upgraded from last year. I think I can speak for all Jag fans in that we are very excited to see all this new talent on the field, and what Gabbert will be able to do with the new help. With the common conception around town being that Laurent Robinson will earn the #1 role, and Blackmon almost all but solidifying his spot on the team, the remaining spots are still up for grabs.

I'm still wondering how many WR's the team will end up keeping on the final roster, but the number I will go with for now will be 5 with 1, maybe even 2 selected to the Practice Squad. I think with the contract behind M80, and if he can continue to play like he did two years ago, and continue doing well in camp (heard hes playing well), I think he can win the starting role in the slot. That might prove to be tough though, because if Cecil Shorts III can put his practice into real games, he looks to be a real threat.

Cecil came into last years season as being highly regarded as the biggest bright spot in camp, but never really had a huge impact on the field, with the exception of one spectacular touchdown catch, and a few other instances. Once again though, Shorts is being praised by Sullivan, and is once again looking good in the off-season. I think Shorts will defiantly earn a spot on the final roster, and maybe even a starting spot.

Thing to look at: If Shorts wins the staring role in the slot, look for M80 to be involved in being moved.

For now, I'll go with the scenario that Thomas wins the starting role, and Shorts earns the 4th or 5th spot on the receiving depth chart. With the last spot here I could see it going a few different ways. I think Lee Evans has a good chance to win this spot. He brings some veteran leadership and knowledge to a young group, and also has some talent left in him and potential to be a big target deep threat that Blaine Gabbert hasn't had yet. If Evans ends up getting snubbed though, Mike Brown or Kevin Elliot have their chance to make their mark on the NFL.

Mike Brown has been getting a lot of attention from the coaching staff, and recent media, and rightly so. He is a converted QB turned WR from a small school, who is playing well in the off-season thus far. He has grown a popular comparison of "Wes Welker," deemed by WR coach Jerry Sullivan, which is something Brown should be proud about, and fans should be excited about, if a rookie UDFA converted QB turned WR from Liberty is drawing such high praise from such a highly regarded coach.

What to Watch for: I think Brown will end up on the Practice Squad, but if he does end up earning a roster spot, he will compete for the slot, which will mean that either M80 or Shorts will not be on the team. So basically, Thomas would be as good as gone.

The last player I will look at here is Kevin Elliot. I currently go to FSU, and have been talked to about Kevin Elliot several times in Tallahassee while wearing Jaguar gear, so there is defiantly a local pull for the UDFA to make the team. In college at FAMU, Elliot stood out, and going undrafted in the 2012 NFL draft, has been playing like he has something to prove. He, like Mike Brown, has gotten a lot of praise by Jaguars staff for standing out in the off-season so far, and has a chance to nudge Evans or maybe even Thomas for their roster spot. I personally like Elliot, and if he doesn't end up making the final roster, will think for sure he will earn a spot on the Practice Squad.

Final Prediction:

#1. Laurent Robinson

#2. Justin Blackmon

#3. Mike Thomas

#4. Lee Evans

#5. Cecil Shorts III

PS:

#1. Kevin Elliot

#2. Mike Brown

Prediction #2 - I discussed a 5 man WR corp., but what if the Jags decided to keep 6?:

#1. Laurent Robinson

#2. Justin Blackmon

#3. Mike Thomas

#4. Lee Evans

#5. Cecil Shorts III

#6. Kevin Elliot

PS:

#1. Mike Brown

And finally Prediction #3, and this one is kind of wild:

#1. Laurent Robinson

#2. Justin Blackmon

#3. Cecil Shorts III

#4. Lee Evans

#5. Mike Brown

#6. Brian Robiskie

PS:

#1. Kevin Elliot

What do y'all think the Jags will end up doing with this situation. It is pretty crazy to think that the Jaguars went from as terrible as the WR corp. was last year, to having to decide such a good WR battle this year. Just one year of good coaching, scouting, and recruiting can revive a group that needed a boost.

Let me know your predictions as well, and if you think any of mine would work. GO JAGS
