At a press conference on Thursday, new Jaguars GM David Caldwell talked about his decision to fire Mike Mularkey as head coach of the Jaguars on Thursday morning.

During his press conference on Thursday, new Jaguars general manager David Caldwell discussed with the Jacksonville media his decision to fire Mike Mularkey as head coach of the Jaguars following a 2-14 season.

"Today was a tough day, we kicked it off by having a difficult conference with [Mularkey]. I appreciated his efforts and I've had a positive relationship with [Mularkey] over the last few years," Caldwell said. "I felt like we needed a fresh start here. I'm looking for the co-building for our football team."

During the press conference, Jaguars owner Shahid Khan reiterated that he felt Mularkey gave his full effort to the job and said, "I know [Mularkey] will be back in the NFL soon."

After being announced as the team's next general manager on Tuesday, Caldwell waited just two days to relieve Mularkey of the position. In Mularkey's first season as the team's head coach, the Jaguars finished the 2012 season with a 2-14 record, the worst in franchise history and earned the second overall selection in the 2013 NFL Draft.
