Shortly after the Jaguars announced a hire for offensive coordinator that not many expected, Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times-Union reports that the team has found its new defensive coordinator, Bob Babich.
Babich, 51, has defensive coordinator experience in the past with the Chicago Bears, but it didn't go very well and he was demoted back to his position as the team's linebackers after three seasons. Serving as the linebackers coach since 2004, Babich has worked closely with Pro Bowlers Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs throughout their careers.
In 2005 and 2006, the Bears finished in the top three in the NFL in points allowed, but during Babich's time as defensive coordinator they never finished in the top 15. When he was replaced in 2010, the team once again broke the top five.
Babich has previous experience with Gus Bradley during their time coaching together at North Dakota State, where Babich was the team's head coach. How much control of the defense will belong to Bradley remains to be seen.
