Jaguars coaching rumors: Shahid Khan leaning towards retaining Mike Mularkey, according to report

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

Mike Mularkey finished with a 2-14 record in his first season as head coach of the Jaguars.

Jaguars owner Shahid Khan met with the team's head coach Mike Mularkey earlier this week and is leaning towards retaining the coach for a second season, according to a report from Darin Gantt of NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk.

A league source informs us that Khan met with coach Mike Mularkey this week, and the early sense is that Mularkey will be retained.

Khan wants to run this past his new general manager, whomever that might be, before anything's set in stone. But it is at least a solid lean, which is good news for a coach coming off a 2-14 season.

Mularkey, 51, was hired by the Jaguars in January 2012, but is seemingly on the hot seat after a 2-14 season that resulted in the firing of general manager Gene Smith. Many reports indicate that it will be the new general manager's decision whether or not Mularkey remains the coach for a second season, but Khan is the one with the ultimate say, although Gantt does say that Khan will "run this past" a new GM.

Prior to joining the Jaguars, Mularkey served as the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons for four seasons. Earlier in his career he served as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills for two seasons before he resigned from the position in January 2006.

Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times-Union had previously said that it would be "very surprising" if Mularkey was retained for a second year.
