Jaguars coaching rumors: Assistant coaches given permission to talk to other teams, according to report

USA TODAY Sports

The Jaguars are currently without a general manager after Gene Smith was fired from the position on Monday.

The assistant coaches for the Jacksonville Jaguars have been given permission to speak with other teams regarding open positions, according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter.

This somewhat contradicts an earlier report from Darin Gantt of NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk who said that Jaguars owner Shahid Khan was leaning towards retaining head coach Mike Mularkey. As Schefter noted in his tweet, it's typically not a good sign for the head coach when a team tells his assistants that they can look for jobs elsewhere while still under contract.

Mularkey has been considered to be on the hot seat after the Jaguars finished 2-14 during his first season as head coach of the team. Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times-Union said on Wednesday that it would be "very surprising" if Mularkey was retained for a another season.

The worst season in franchise history resulted in the firing of general manager Gene Smith and the new GM is reportedly going to have a say in Mularkey's future with the organization.
