Blaine Gabbert to remain Jaguars starter

Scott Kane-USA TODAY Sports

Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley indicated that as long as he's healthy, Blaine Gabbert will remain the starting quarterback.

The Jacksonville Jaguars were pounded once again to fall to 0-5 on the 2013 season and once again a big reason for the loss was because of the poor performance of the offense. Early on it appeared that the offense might actually start to come alive, as Blaine Gabbert connected with Justin Blackmon for a 67-yard touchdown early in the game, but it was all downhill from there.

Gabbert ended up leaving the game late with a hamstring injury, allowing Chad Henne to come in for some mop up duty. This was well after the offense went off a cliff however, including multiple bad decisions and passes by Gabbert, including a pick-six, a turnover in the redzone on fourth down and beginning to see phantom pressure once again.

Henne came in and hit a few nice passes, even leading to a touchdown drive but overall still looked like Chad Henne; not good and inconsistent.

With the way Gabbert was pulled from the game and the fact that Henne wasn't a complete train wreck led some to wonder if it might be getting close to time for Bradley to pull the plug on the Gabbert experiment, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

"We'll take a look at his injury, but other than that, yes," Bradley told reporters when he was asked if Gabbert would start going forward.

At this point, it doesn't really matter who the quarterback is, but if Gabbert continues to play as poorly as he has in his first three games of the season there will be a point at which Bradley will have to make a change just for the sake of making a change.

It doesn't appear to be at that point yet, though.

When will it get to that point? My guess, based entirely on personal opinion, is the bye week. That would give Gabbert six starts and plenty of time for Bradley and company to evaluate how they feel about him and move.

While we've all seen Gabbert start for three years, this staff has seen him for just three games in the regular season. They weren't going to pull the plug on him after the first three games had he not been injured, so it's no shocker they're not going to after his third start, no matter how bad he is, especially when Henne was just as ineffective in his two starts.
