With Dwight Lowery out for the rest of the season leaves the Jaguars with 6th round pick Josh Evans starting at Free Safety. Evans has started 2 of 5 games to start off the season and has looked pretty decent. The Jaguars had a 3rd round grade on him coming into the draft. I believe that Evans will emerge as a quality safety. Although he doesn't have crazy measurables Evans has great size at the positions and offers solid speed and leaping ability. Quicker than fast.
Evans and Cyprien should be a solid tandem. I'm not sure if he has the range necessary for single high safety, which would allow for Cyprien to possibly move up like a 4th Linebacker (Edit: Saw a little bit of that during the Rams game.) But not everybody is a Earl Thomas. Shoot, only Earl Thomas is Earl Thomas. I wonder if Bradley would want to move Cyprien up but they're not necessarily doing everything the same as Seattle.
Evans could possibly emerge as a quality safety or better. He has the tools to be a solid starter, but will he be any better than solid? Who knows. For the most part Evans has looked good and figures into next years starting defense. The Jags have a promising secondary with quality talent at every position. Next year will be the year that some of these guys really show up but the rookie woes will show this year. I had my eye on Demetrius McCray and Jeremy Harris prior to the draft and we'll see how they figure into the picture.
McCray reminds me a whole lot of Richard Sherman. He has good size and ridiculously long arms. Sherman and McCray's combines are very similar except for Sherman being much stronger and quicker. Harris is just a really nice talent in my mind. Great size/speed combination and displays nice leaping ability. Sadly we won't be able to see him this year but the future of this secondary is bright.
I'm a big fan of Will Blackmon. As a Seahawks fan I had a chance to watch him this preseason and the dude is absolutely electrifying. Now do the Jags bring him back another year? At 28 years old perhaps they bring him in for another year. Or perhaps he ventures off to a different team. Perhaps they go with a young(er) secondary. I don't know. Many questions to be answered about this secondary, and every other spot on this roster next year.
