The Jacksonville Jaguars added another pass rusher to the fold on Monday, as the team announced that it claimed rookie defensive end Gerald Rivers one day after he was released by the St. Louis Rams. To make room for Rivers, the Jaguars placed offensive lineman Michael Brewster on injured reserve after he suffered a fractured ankle in Week 15.
Rivers, 23, tallied two sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss in his junior season with the Mississippi Rebels and 2.5 sacks as a sophomore, but did not play in his senior season due to academic reasons. After signing with the Rams as an undrafted free agent, Rivers notched a sack in preseason and earned a spot on the team's 53-man roster. He has played in just 10 regular season snaps and recorded one tackle.
At 6'4, 249 pounds, Rivers will presumably fit in the Jacksonville defense at the LEO position where he will be a pass rushing specialist. Jason Babin, Andre Branch and Ryan Davis currently split time at the position.
Brewster, 24, signed with the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent in 2012 and has made 10 career starts for the team including a Week 15 matchup against the Buffalo Bills.
