Maurice Jones-Drew contract: Jaguars RB says he wants to stay in Jacksonville

Sam Greenwood

Jones-Drew is nearing the end of his contract, but wants to stay with the Jaguars for longer.

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew has just three games remaining on the five-year contract extension he signed with the team in 2009, but if it were up to the running back, he'd be with the team longer. At least, that's what he told Rich Eisen and the rest of the NFL Network crew following a 27-20 victory over the Houston Texans on Thursday Night Football.

"I want to be here," Jones-Drew said, before going on to say that his agent will get together with Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell in the offseason "and get it done."

Jones-Drew, 28, has spent his entire career with the Jaguars after he was selected in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft. Since then he has earned three Pro Bowl selections and has accumulated 7,987 yards rushing and 68 touchdowns on the ground. On Thursday night he eclipsed 100 yards rushing for the first time since Week 3 of the 2012 season before leaving with a hamstring injury that he says is not serious.

The veteran running back had a previous contract holdout during the 2012 offseason, but did not receive a new deal from the team. He was used in a reserve role for the first game of the season before returning to the starting lineup in Week 2.
