Texans vs. Jaguars: Analyzing snap counts (defense)

Sam Greenwood

Taking a look at the defensive snap counts for the Jaguars against the Houston Texans.

Defensive tackle
Sen'Derrick Marks Roy Miller Abry Jones
87%
73/84 plays
42%
35/84 plays
21%
13/84 plays

Thoughts: The Jaguars seemed to rotate their defensive tackle around more than usual the past couple of weeks, including in some passing downs using just Marks and three LEO ends.

LEO/Defensive end
Jason Babin Tyson Alualu Jeremy Mincey Andre Branch
Ryan Davis
79%
66/84 plays
44%
37/84 plays
44%
37/84 plays
65%
55/84 plays
23%
19/84 plays

Thoughts: The Jaguars saw a lot of rotation between Jeremy Mincey and Tyson Alualu with Mincey's return, which is no surprise. On the LEO side of things we saw a lot more double LEO looks and sometimes looks with all three of the LEO ends on the field at once. As the season has gone on, Gus Bradley and Bob Babich have been more creative up front.

Linebacker
Paul Posluszny Russell Allen Geno Hayes John Lotulelei
JT Thomas

84/84 plays
38%
32/84 plays
87%
73/84 plays
10%
8/84 plays
13%
11/84 plays

Thoughts: We saw the Jaguars work more linebacker rotation in on Thursday Night, likely because there were so many snaps to go around.

Cornerback
Dwayne Gratz Alan Ball Will Blackmon Mike Harris
90%
76/84 plays
96%
81/84 plays
36%
30/84 plays
30%
25/84 plays

Thoughts: The absence of Josh Evans made the Jaguars play more corners in their nickel sets than they've been doing, but luckily Will Blackmon was back so it wasn't much of an issue. The snap distribution makes a ton of sense, with Harris and Blackmon splitting nickel duties.

Safety
Jonathan Cyprien Winston Guy
100%
84/84 plays
100%
84/84 plays

Thoughts: With Josh Evans out, Winston Guy got the full time at the safety position as he and Cyprien played every snap on Thursday. Neither were really noticeable in a bad way, either.
