2013 NFL combine: Jaguars GM doesn't think interviews are big

David Caldwell doesn't put a ton of stock into combine interviews.

Many will tell you, including myself, that the NFL combine isn't the big deal it's made out to be in the modern NFL. It's become another television event for the media and fans and another thing to keep the news cycle going during the offseason, but to teams and scouts it doesn't mean a ton.

Generally the biggest thing at the NFL combine are the player interviews, but even Jacksonville Jaguars general manager David Caldwell doesn't seem to put a ton of stock in those.

"For some, we'll focus on the player's intelligence, or we may want to focus on this player's character," Caldwell told John Oehser of Jaguars.com. "In other cases, we may just want to get to know a player or find out about his family. It's part of the process. I don't think I would ever not draft somebody or draft somebody solely on the interview, but it's part of the checks and balances we do."

Players headed into the combine more than ever are prepared for what teams are going to throw at them by their agents, but good teams know what to ask and how to ask the questions to get the information they're looking for.
