Matt Flynn trade rumors: Seahawks unlikely to cut QB

Joe Nicholson-US PRESSWIRE

Some think the Jaguars could explore a trade for Matt Flynn.

There has been some speculation that the Jacksonville Jaguars could make a run at Seattle Seahawks backup quarterback Matt Flynn, connecting the dots between Flynn and the Seahawks former defensive coordinator and Jaguars new head coach Gus Bradley.

Bradley would certainly be familiar with Flynn, having seen him everyday in practice for the 2012 NFL season after the Seahawks signed Flynn to a three-year, $19.5 million deal with $10 million guaranteed. In training camp and the preseason, rookie third round pick Russell Wilson wound up winning the starting job from Flynn and leading the Seahawks to the playoffs after a sensational rookie season, leaving many thinking the Seahawks will part ways with Flynn.

There were some rumblings Flynn could be flat out released by the Seahawks, but as Danny Kelly of the Field Gulls writes, that's probably not going to happen.

Per RapSheet, a "Seahawks source says their "priority" is to have [Matt Flynn] as a backup. Remember, Russell Wilson is a bargain, total cost of QB isn't bad. [The] Seahawks know he wants to be a starter, so they are open to trading him. Teams [are] nervous about his elbow, but sources say its fine."

Essentially, and I'm paraphrasing, "If you want him, we're going to need those picks, you vultures. We're not releasing him. Kthx."

Kelly goes on to note that cutting Flynn would only save the Seahawks $1.25 million in cap space, so it's highly unlikely he's flat out released.

If Flynn was someone on the free agent market, I think he would make sense for the Jaguars to pursue, given Bradley believes he's a capable quarterback. If you have to give up draft picks for Matt Flynn however, I don't think that's going to be a way for David Caldwell and company to go.
