There has been much talk on the issue of quarterback here in Jacksonville. We’ve debated this with Byron, David, and now Blaine. The franchise quarterback is probably the most important position in football, so the Jaguars should tread carefully in these waters.
In the case of the Jaguars, it’s best not to throw the baby out with the bath water. Blaine Gabbert has potential to be an elite quarterback in this league. With the right cast of characters behind him, his talents will show.
Take for instance his front line from 2011 and 2012. Porous as a sponge, to say the least. You can’t judge a quarterback’s pocket presence if no pocket actually existed.
Also, Gabbert is still the second youngest quarterback in the league. A young QB like that will need time to develop. He has had two different coordinators, two different head coaches, and two different quarterback coaches in as many years. It is difficult to build a young quarterback with inconsistency like this.
Gabbert may have been skittish in the past, but with another full offseason under his belt, I am confident that he will be the franchise quarterback of this team.
