The Jacksonville Jaguars are going to have a quarterback competition going into the 2013 season, but already it appears it's not going to be one of those wink-wink-nudge-nudge competitions, at least not between Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne, but a full blown open competition.
Which quite frankly, is how it should be.
"We have two guys competing as hard as the possibly can to put themselves in position to be the starting quarterback. I think they need to have tunnel vision," Jaguars offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch told the media prior to Wednesday's mini-camp. "I think they need to focus on what they can control and not focus on really anything other than that."
The Jaguars didn't really have an open competition last season, but if there had been one Gabbert still would have wound up the starter to begin the regular season, and it wasn't close at all between he and Henne.
"At some point in time, when we're playing games, the starter will get the reps first," Fisch continued on the quarterback competition. "At this point in time, we're just rotating through because it wouldn't be fair to evaluate somebody if they were always taking reps with a second-team group. Right now, we're rotating through."
The team will still add at least one quarterback going forward, be it in the draft or in free agency, but one has to wonder if that third quarterback will also be thrust into the competition.
The smart money says yes.
