NFL Draft 2013: QB class is deep, says Jaguars GM David Caldwell

USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars will likely be draft a quarterback at some point in the 2013 NFL Draft, but the big question is who and where. The class overall has been downplayed by most draft experts, but Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell appears to feel a bit differently about it.

"Believe it or not, the quarterback group is better top to bottom than it has been in years past," Caldwell told Ryan O'Halloran of The Florida Times-Union.

Much of the criticism of the 2013 quarterback draft class is that there is no can't miss prospect, no Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III, but the reality is there usually isn't. Quarterbacks like that, that appear to be a sure thing, are few and far between in most draft classes, so expecting that every time you're team is looking for one is unrealistic.

Personally, I feel the Jaguars will draft a quarterback within the first 64 picks of the draft, be it at No. 2, No. 33, or No. 64 or somewhere in between after the result of a trade down. I think it's unlikely, but still possible, the Jaguars draft a quarterback second overall, but instead look at the top of the second round where they could have their choice of the remaining quarterbacks.

"There are good quarterbacks out there," Jaguars offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch told reporters during the team's three-day veteran mini-camp. "Take away last year because of the amount of guys that ended up starting and it's going to be a quarterback class like most."

The Jaguars have been linked to a total of nine quarterbacks according to O'Halloran, so they've definitely been doing their homework and look likely to draft one.

I would be surprised, as mentioned before, if one wasn't drafted in the first three rounds. It's pretty telling that the team has done absolutely nothing at the position, especially with it being an open competition. If you're going to try to find a guy who might be able to win the job as a rookie, it's likely going to have to come in the first three rounds.
