Who is Luke Joeckel? He is the 2012 Outland Trophy winner for the best offensive lineman in the NCAA. He started 37 games at left tackle for Texas A&M after winning the job as a true freshman.
Gus on Joeckel: We thought he was the best player. Regardless of need, we wanted to stick to the plan of drafting the best player. #jaguars— Cole Pepper (@ColePepper) April 26, 2013
Luke Joeckel comes across as a great kid and a fantastic football player. Many analysts have compared Joeckel to Cleveland Browns stud left tackle, All-Pro Joe Thomas. Joeckel will immediately switch to the right tackle position in Jacksonville because current left tackle Eugene Monroe plays at a high level and shuts amazing pass rushers out of the game (think of Chicago Bears DE Julius Peppers). Placing Joeckel at left tackle and moving Monroe to another position would actually hurt the Jaguars in the immediate future.
As far as scheme is concerned, whoever plays QB for the Jaguars in 2013 will not need to worry themselves the night before in regards to running for their life from defensive pressure. Isn't it nice to say that?
I'll admit that Joeckel would not have been my selection but the Jaguars absolutely stole value from the draft. After GM Dave Caldwell announced earlier in the year that he would be drafting based on needs, he found himself with what he considered to be the top overall selection. Joeckel cannot flop in the NFL, he is that talented. I actually find it great that he will play right tackle for the Jaguars.
Again, I wouldn't personally have made that choice but I applaud Caldwell sticking to his draft board and selecting what he found to be the highest available talent in the entire 2013 draft. Joeckell may even be the best right tackle in the NFL by the end of his rookie year.
