I think David Caldwell is absolutely brilliant and this draft could not have gone conceivably better for a rebuilding team with more needs than draft picks. It's comforting to know we have a GM with a fully functioning brain manning the controls of this team.
But that being said I'm absolutely taken aback and disgusted by a lot of the completely unfounded idiocy spewing from some buffoons on this site that think they can manage a draft. This despicable troll Seth Roundtree needs to be banned. This pathetic doom and gloom when we just got the unanimously proclaimed GREATEST player in the draft and the highest rated tackle prospect since Joe Thomas and Jake Long.
We got a player w comparisons to Tony Boselli. A methodical player who will only improve under Yarno's tutelage. It was the best pick of any team in the first round. Then we got who many believed was the best safety in the entire draft at great value in the second round. A guy who reminds me a lot of a guy named Double D. And we didn't have to reach to fill a huge need for a change.
And all these people who hang onto every syllable out of King Alfie's mouth and believe everything he says as gospel about Eugen Monroe need to watch tape over the last 4 years. This guy is about as much elite as Michael Jackson is alive. Eugene Monroe at this point considering his subpar production, poor pass blocking and his draft position should be considered almost a bust. He's not a strength for this team and his skill set is better suited to the right anyways. Gus and David want competition and he's gonna have to earn his job if he wants to be this team's starting left tackle. And competition will make him better. If he loses he'll play right tackle and he's under contract. Andre Smith was drafted before him and plays right and just earned big money. Teams know the value of pass protection especially in a passing league. The fact is especially true considering what division we play in. Against Houston they'll have to go up against JJ Watt and Antonio Smith and JJ lines up on the right. In Indy they'll have to go up against Bjorn Werner and Robert Mathis who seems to be getting better with age. If we want to expect to compete with them we will have to shut them down and give Gabbert or whoever plays QB a chance to succeed. Tackle was the most important need and safety a close second. Chris Ballhawk Proskinski couldn't start in the indoor football league.
We addressed both those needs in the draft. And because Caldwell stayed true to his board he's got possibly the best QB in the entire draft still available in the 4th- Matt Barkley. And an elite pass rusher in Brandon Jenkins sitting there. That's what happens when you don't reach, something us Jag fans had long become accustomed too under the previous two principal decision makers.
Lastly everyone shouldn't be so quick to give up on Branch! Mark my words he will flourish under Todd Wash's tutelage in Gus's system. Babin is the quintessential Leo. Both have enormous talent and Mincey and Lane the Bringer of Pain provide ultimate depth. A system change and the new attitude permeating this franchise along w an offense that will sustain drives with far better run blocking and pass protection will make this a top 12 defense again. The talent is there. Examine two years ago
