With the 1st Draft in the books now these are some takeaways from my perspective.
1. They stuck to their guns on "Needs Based Drafting".
They made very clear early on that there was A) We have serious issues at Right Tackle B) There was not a Strong Safety on the roster after the release of D. Landry and C) We were seriously deficient at CB.
Well Luke Joekel, and a ton of youth in the Secondary is what they gave us.
2. Smoke Screens We were looking at players from UConn and it was widely beleived the players we were interested in were CB Blidi Wreh Wilson and LB Sio Moore. it turns out that we were in love with D. Gratz. When we drafted Gratz both Wilson and Moore were available. Caldwell's comments after the pick was that Gratz was the the last CB we had slotted for that draft position and that if we had missed him our pick likely would have been Ace Sanders who we got in the next round.
3. How did they really feel about the pass rushers this year vs what we have already?
They had many opportunities to draft Pass rushers but passed at every opportunity because that saw a greater need at other positions even in rounds 4 and 5 where we drafted specialists WR and RB instead.
I remember specifically looking at the board before the 4th round pick seeing Texas DE Alex Okafor and FSU OLB/DE Brandon Jenkins who was also passed up for Denard Robinson.
4. The second round of free agency.
The only thing that I see we have yet to address is the LB position. I guess we will either turn our attention to the second round of free agency to fill out the LB positions or maybe they feel good about what we have there.
