Former-Jaguars great Jimmy Smith serving 6-year jail sentence

Smith made five consecutive Pro Bowls with the Jaguars and retired with 12,287 yards receiving.

Former-Jaguars wide receiver Jimmy Smith is the franchise's all-time leader in every major receiving statistic, but struggled with substance abuse for much of his career before retiring in 2006. Unfortunately, he has yet to win that battle with substances, as Dan Hicken of First Coast News reports that Smith is serving a six-year sentence in Mississippi for cocaine possession and illegal possession of a firearm.

Smith was booked in a Mississippi jail in late March, according to Hicken's report, which would explain his sudden absence from Twitter from a few months prior after having an active account prior.

He had arrests for drug charges in both 2009 and 2011, as well as a DUI charge during his playing days in 2001 that was dropped, although he reportedly had traces of cocaine in his system. In 2003, he served a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy.

In 2011, Smith launched the Jimmy Smith Foundation that looked "to make a positive impact on the lives of today's youth." He is tentatively scheduled to be released from prison on Nov. 8, 2018.
