The Jacksonville Jaguars 53-man roster should look drastically different than it did at the end of the 2012 season, especially on the defensive side of the ball. The team could potentially have hauled over nearly half their roster in a single offseason and still not be finished churning players in and out.
Without further ado, here's my shot at the Jaguars 53-man roster before final cuts, not taking into account players they add off waivers.
Reasoning: With how things have worked out through training camp and the preseason, I feel like the Jaguars only keep two quarterbacks. Neither Mike Kafka nor Matt Scott have looked any good so far in the preseason.
Change: Previously I had Henne getting cut, but with the injury to Gabbert and how bad Kafka and Scott have been, that's pretty much out of the window.
Reasoning: This will probably be the biggest sticking point on my projection, but if Justin Forsett is healthy I don't think Jordan Todman makes the roster. If he's not, I think Todman makes it over Ta'ufo'ou. I just think Todman is a guy you can pick up again if you need to and he's not going to get many touches between Jones-Drew and Robinson on game day anyway. I also think Pryor fits the style of fullback that Jedd Fisch wants to use, because of his catch ability out of the backfield.
Change: Previously I had De'Leon Eskridge making the roster, but he didn't do much of anything in camp or preseason.
Reasoning: The starting five should be set. The backups however are still up in the air, but ultimately I think this is how it shakes out. Pasztor can play inside or out and Nowak has gotten some first team reps with the Rackley injury.
Change: I had Roddy Tomlin making the roster, but that was more just picking a UDFA lineman to make the team since once usually does.
Reasoning: The wide receiver position shake out will be interesting, but this is how I think it winds up. Palmer is going to be iffy for some people, but I think his speed buys him a shot on the roster while Blackmon is out. The team could go looking for a big body wide receiver, too.
Change: I had Mohamed Massaquoi making the roster, but welp. He's cut.
Reasoning: I think Reisner has solidified himself as the No. 2 TE and I think they hang on to Ryan Otten, who was a priority free agent for them.
Change: I had Kyler Reed, just because, but he was cut about 2 days after my first 53-man. In my face.
Reasoning: I think these are clearly the top four in the rotation at the defensive tackle position, with Deaderick also available at the 5-technique end position. I also have T.J. Barnes making the roster because I think he's played well against the run during the preseason and he might be a hard guy to stash on the practice squad because of his natural size.
Change: Added T.J. Barnes.
Defensive end (LEO + 5-technique):
Reasoning: I swapped one shocker with another, as I don't have Andre Branch making the final roster. I ultimately think he's traded off somewhere for a ham sandwich. He really offers absolutely nothing, so he's probably going to dominate the fourth preseason game and make me look like an idiot.
Change: Jeremy Mincey makes the squad, because of how desperate they are for pass rushers and Andre Branch is gone.
Reasoning: The top three are set and I think Reynolds has locked himself up a roster spot. After that I'm picking two special teamer guys to make the team, but this is also a position they look at the waiver wire.
Reasoning: The starting four and the rookies are set. I also have both Trufant and Harris making the roster, though Harris has struggled a bit in the preseason. The team apparently likes Rutland as the primary back up, but I still wouldn't be shocked to seem him cut in favor of a waiver claim. I think the team might also look at safety as well.
