Blaine Gabbert injury: Jaguars QB throws at practice

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Blaine Gabbert returned to throwing in practice on Monday roughly two weeks after he suffered a thumb fracture in his throwing hand.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert looked as if he was on track to make a Week 1 start against the Kansas City Chiefs, as he was throwing during the media portion of Monday's practice, according to Hays Carlyon of the Florida Times-Union.

While Gabbert had a light wrap on his thumb and wasn't taking snaps from under center, the news of his return to throwing is a positive sign for the quarterback roughly two weeks after he suffered a fractured thumb on his throwing hand in a preseason game.

Gabbert, 23, sat out the remaining two preseason games, but there has been optimism that he'll be able to return for the regular season opener. If he is unable to do so, sixth-year quarterback Chad Henne would be the team's starter instead.

A first-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, Gabbert has started 24 career games for the Jaguars compiling 3,876 yards, 21 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. While his 70.2 career passer rating hasn't inspired much hope, he completed 13-of-16 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown against the Jets in preseason before leaving the game with a thumb injury.
