Seahawks release D'Anthony Smith, likely nullifies Jaguars trade

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

Former Jaguars defensive tackle D'Anthony Smith was traded to the Seahawks for a conditional draft pick, but his release likely means the conditions of the trade were not met.

The Seattle Seahawks released former Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle D'Anthony Smith on Tuesday, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. The roster move will likely result in Seattle keeping the 2014 NFL Draft pick that was traded to the Jaguars on a conditional basis prior to the regular season.

Smith, 25, was a third-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft of the Jaguars, but didn't make his debut for the team until two seasons later after tearing his Achilles tendon as a rookie and injuring his foot in 2011. After playing in eight games for the Jaguars in 2012, Smith was on the roster bubble heading into 2013 and was listed as one of the players set to be released in the team's final cuts.

Buried in the waiver order, the Seahawks elected to trade a conditional 2014 NFL Draft pick to the Jaguars in exchange for Smith. While conditions of the trade were not revealed, Smith appeared in just two games with the Seahawks and his release so early in the season likely means, speculatively speaking, that the conditions of the trade were not met and the draft pick will likely remain in the hands of Seattle.

Smith took just 47 snaps with the Seattle defense and was listed as inactive for the team's Week 3 victory over the Jaguars.
