Jaguars unlikely to cut Marcedes Lewis

There was some thought that Jaguars tight end Marcedes Lewis could be a cap casualty, but general manager Dave Caldwell dismissed the idea.

Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Marcedes Lewis is often the target of criticism, sometimes warranted but often times misguided, but there was some thought that he could be a salary casualty in the 2014 offseason as the Jaguars continue to rebuild their roster.

General manager Dave Caldwell was asked on Monday if he thought Lewis' high cap number would be an issue going forward and Caldwell all but dismissed the question.

"Yeah, we anticipate him being back," Caldwell said when asked about Lewis' salary being an issue. "I haven’t discussed it with anybody but yeah, as far as right now."

Lewis signed a five-year, $35 million deal with $17 million guaranteed prior to the 2011 season, but his production on the stat sheet hasn't replicated his Pro Bowl season in 2010, which saw him haul in 10 touchdowns.

"I have to sit down with Tim Walsh and everybody and I haven’t even thought much about that," Caldwell said. "We’re more evaluating players and we’ll assign what we feel is the proper value if we feel good about it or don’t feel good about it.

"But we don’t have any cap issues right now so cap is not an issue."

All signs point to Lewis being back in 2014, and in all honesty he should. Lewis is an asset in the blocking game and he showcased some of his receiving ability in the second half of the season when he was used more in the passing game. After the bye week in 2013, when Lewis was finally healthy, he hauled in 23 receptions for 322 yards and four touchdowns.
