Jaguars biggest needs are pass rush, running game says Dave Caldwell

Heading into the offseason, the Jaguars think their biggest needs are in the pass rush and running game.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have a plethora of needs in the 2014 offseason, as general manager Dave Caldwell still has his work cut out for him in rebuilding the roster. In the season review press conference on Monday, Caldwell was asked what the biggest need heading into the offseason was, and his answer was what most of us expected.

"I would say rush, our running game," Caldwell said. "I think with the ability to draft offensive linemen in the middle rounds, sign some guys of value in free agency. And I feel like that and with another year in our system, is a feasible thing for us to accomplish going into next year."

The Jaguars running game, which in the franchises history has been a strength, has fallen off a cliff the past two seasons. A lot of it has to do with Maurice Jones-Drew dealing with injury and slowly declining as a player, but the talent on the interior offensive line has deteriorated at an alarming rate since Vince Manuwai left the team.

I would expect the Jaguars to sign at least one starter in free agency on the interior offensive line, as well as draft someone in the mid-rounds to compete for a starting job.

On the other side of the ball, obviously pass rusher is a dire need.

"As far as the pass-rush goes, they’re not real easy to find. I think we have to find the right person to fit our scheme," Caldwell added. "We’re going to be on track to find a good opportunity in free agency if there’s somebody that we feel like we can develop as a pass-rusher or in the draft."

Defensive end is another position it's possible the Jaguars target in free agency, but the bigger question is will it be a position they address like last season,  one short-term "prove it" deals to under the radar guys, or will they go for the big splash and impact player immediately?
