NFL free agency 2014: Alex Mack expected to test open market

David Richard-US PRESSWIRE

Cleveland Browns impending free agent, center Alex Mack, is expected to test the open market in March and could be someone the Jaguars are interested in.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be looking to upgrade their offensive line during the 2014 NFL offseason, be it in free agency or the NFL Draft. The team has a massive need at arguably the second most important position on the offensive line, center, and Cleveland Browns center Alex Mack is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent.

Long time rock Brad Meester announced during the 2013 season it would be his last, as he'd retire from the NFL after 14 seasons with the Jaguars. Meester's play had started to plateau and slowly decline the past few seasons, but he was still more than adequate.

Mack, 28, is schedule to hit the open market and by all accounts plans to dip his toes in the water. It's a position the Jaguars desperately need to upgrade and he could be someone on their short-list of free agents. It's possible the Browns slap the franchise tag on Mack, but that would be committing $9 million on a one-year deal to a center.

The more likely scenario however is that Mack hits the open market and looks for a contract similar to, but probably more than, the one that Ryan Khalil recently signed with the Carolina Panthers, which amounted to six-years for roughly $49 million with $19 million guaranteed.

Mack has graded out as the top center on ProFootballFocus this past season and is widely considered the top center in the league.

The big question is, while the Jaguars have massive cap room, are they in a spot yet to drop a big contract on a player like Mack?
