2014 Mock Offseason

With over $50 million in cap room to spend, the jags target Michael Bennett, Michael Johnson, Brian Orakpo, Jason Worilds, John Jerry, Joe Asamoah, Eric Decker, Golden Tate and Hakeem Nicks. Let’s say the jags go 3 for 10 and sign Michael Johnson, Jason Worilds and Golden Tate. QB, LG, C, and HB are still unaddressed going into the draft.

The Draft

Round 1, Pick 3: QB Teddy Bridgewater (Louisville), 6’ 2" 210 lbs

2013 Stats: 3970 yards (71% completions), 31 TD / 4 INT

40 yard dash: 4.67 s

Bridgewater is no Luck, and that helps us. Clowney, Manziel and Bortles also have legitimate chances at being selected first overall. It also looks like the Rams could stick with Bradford for another year. If these stars align, Bridgewater falls to third overall and the Jags walk away with the most intelligent, pro-ready prospect at the quarterback position.

The Gabbert experiment revealed the unfortunate results of drafting a quarterback with all the "tools" but no pocket presence; Bridgewater doesn’t have the biggest arm and he could use another 15 pounds, but he is calm under pressure and he plays smart football, which will be a welcome change in Jacksonville.

Round 2, Pick 7: LG Xavier Su’a Filo (UCLA), 6’ 3", 305 lbs

For the quarterback change to be effective the Jags will have to improve their interior line play. Uche is serviceable at right guard; Su’a Filo can start on the left side, where he played his excellent 2013 campaign. He possesses the initial burst and lateral quickness needed to excel in the zone blocking scheme, as well as the build and power to handle simple bull rushes.

Round 3, Pick 6: HB Lache Seastrunk (Baylor), 5’ 9", 210 lbs

2013 stats: 1,177 yards (7.4 yards/carry), 11 TD

40 yard dash: 4.45 s

We need to plan for a future without MJD. Seastrunk is a similar back, running low to the ground and hard to tackle. He has a rare mix of power and speed that sets him apart from the many talented running backs in the draft this year.

Round 3, Pick 10-15 (Trade Round 4, Pick 5 and Round 6 and 7 selections): LEO Jeremiah Attaochu (Georgia Tech), 6’ 3", 250 lbs

2013 Stats: 37 solo tackles, 12 sacks, 2 pass defenses

40 yard dash: 4.68 s

Draft to the scheme. Attaochu fits the mold for LEO pass rushers.

Round 4, Pick 14: WR Brandon Coleman (Rutgers), 6’ 5", 220 lbs

2013 stats: 34 recs, 538 yards (15.8 yards/reception), 4 TD

40 yard dash: 4.59 s

Unfortunately, we also have to plan for a future without Justin Blackmon. We could find a serviceable replacement in Coleman, a lanky receiver who reaches over and plucks the ball away from defenders with ease. He has solid but not elite straight line speed, and his height gives him a high center of gravity that makes him easy to knock off balance and tackle. These faults should drop Coleman down to the fourth round and give the Jags a shot at a potential matchup nightmare for opposing defenses.

Round 5, Pick 4: C Tyler Larsen (Utah State), 6’ 4", 320 lbs

He is as good as any mid-round center. The Browns have too much cap room to let Mack slip; so the jags spend a non-premium pick on a non-premium position.

Round 5, Pick 10: LEO Michael Sam (Missouri), 6’ 2", 260 lbs

2013 Stats: 31 solo tackles, 11.5 sacks, 2 pass defenses

40 yard dash: 4.74 s

Recent controversy drops Sam down to somewhere in the fifth round. The Jags could get a steal in value here with the SEC Defensive Player of the Year.

Round 5, Pick 18: HB Andre Williams (Boston College), 6’, 225 lbs

2013 stats: 2177 yards (6.1 yards/carry), 18 TDs

40 yard dash: 4.57 s

Injuries and lack of elite speed have this 2013 Heisman finalist falling into the later rounds. Williams can provide the third and short, goalline power-running that will be sorely missed of the dearly departed Maurice Jones-Drew. Todman, Seastrunk, and Williams would be an exciting committee to watch.
