Jason Babin terminates contract, will become a free agent, per report

Phil Sears-USA TODAY Sports

The 33-year old pass rusher Jason Babin has terminated his remaining two years on contract with the Jaguars and he will become a free agent.

According to a report by ESPN's John Clayton, Jason Babin decided to terminate the remaining two years of his contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The 33-year old was originally claimed off waivers by the Jaguars in the 2012 NFL season and finished his tenure with the Jaguars with nine sacks between the two seasons.

Babin was the Jaguars first official "LEO" in their defensive scheme but the team has decided to part with the veteran and his $6 million base salary. Babin's release also saves the Jaguars $6.175 million on their 2014 salary cap, pushing it over $59 million in room.

It's likely the Jaguars address the pass rusher position in the 2014 NFL Draft or in free agency, but with Andre Branch and Ryan Davis returning and the likely addition of another young pass rusher, Babin's playing time likely would not have matched his salary.

Babin was originally drafted in the first round by the Houston Texans in the 2004 NFL Draft and had stints with the Seahawks, Chiefs, Eagles (twice) and Titans before joining Jacksonville.
