NFL free agency does not officially start until Tuesday, March 11 at 4 p.m. ET, but beginning at noon on Saturday teams can officially contact agents and enter into negotiations for players who are scheduled to be unrestricted free agents.
Termed "legal tampering" teams cannot bring players in for actual visits or actually speak to the players themselves, but they can go ahead and get some contractual things out of the way before the free agency clock actually strikes. Though, a player cannot sign a deal with a team until March 11 at 4 p.m. ET.
So to recap:
-Agents can negotiate numbers, but not actually sign a deal
-Agents can talk to teams, not the player
-Players can't visit other teams (except their own)
-Only applies to UFAs, not RFAs or ERFAs
Players who are currently street free agents, AKA players who have already been released and their contract terminated, are free to visit, negotiate and sign with new teams prior to the March 11 deadline.
We will update any Jacksonville Jaguars rumors in this post all day.
12:22 PM: Remove Everson Griffen from your Jaguars free agency wish list, he's re-signed with the Vikings. A smart move for Minnesota and likely eliminates them from the Michael Johnson race.
DE Everson Griffen is re-signing with the Vikings on a huge 5-year deal, per source— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 9, 2014
8:35 AM: Not necessarily news for the Jaguars, but there are some reports the Houston Texans are interested in trading for Ryan Mallett. The dots to connect are easy, as O'Brien was a coach with the Patriots when they drafted Mallett and reports are that he still is a big fan. Not sure what the compensation would be, but that would clearly rule them out of taking a QB if the trade is made.
8:30 AM: It appears there is going to be a ton of interest in free agent DE Michael Johnson, but that's not a surprise really. There have already been 7-8 teams rumored to be interested so the Jaguars are going to have to pay a hefty deal if they want him and I think they'll be willing to, to a point.
5:19 PM: Red Bryant's deal is actually cheaper than I expected it to be. I will provided an updated cap-room number when more details are released.
For Red Bryant and the #Jaguars, it’s a 4-year deal worth $17 million. Should fit right in to Gus Bradley’s defense— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 8, 2014
3:00 PM: I reported last night that Red Bryant was in town visiting with the Jaguars and according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Jaguars have locked him up to a four-year deal. It's an excellent signing for the Jaguars and adds to their depth on the defensive line, specifically in the five-technique role. I don't think this signals the end of Tyson Alualu either, because at worst he's a strong backup and the Jags don't save against the cap releasing him.
12:38 PM: The Buccaneers have released Davin Joseph, saving about $6 million on their salary cap. Joseph is another guard added to the free agent pool. At 30 years old it's highly unlikely the Jaguars will be interested.
12:14 PM: The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly interested in DE Michael Johnson, who I think will be the Jaguars No. 1 target in free agency. Johnson is also reportedly the top target for the Minnesota Vikings, but a lot of that is dot connecting with his former DC and now Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer.
11:53 AM: Appears the actual salary break down of Chad Henne's deal is out. As initially thought, it's basically a one-year deal for $4.5 million. The $8 million deal has $4.5 million guaranteed, which is paid out in the form of a $1.5 million base salary in 2014 with a $3 million roster bonus making his cap hit $4.5 million. In 2015 his base salary is $3.5 million and he can be released for $3.5 million savings on the cap.
11:40 AM: The New York Daily News is reporting that the Jets are going to "make a play" for free agent guard Jon Asamoah. Asamoah is someone I think the Jaguars could also be in play for, as he's ideally suited for a zone-blocking scheme, which is what the Jaguars run. He's also only 26 years old and despite being "benched" last season, he still had a good year.
