NFL Draft results: Luke Bowanko picked by Jaguars

Peter Casey-US PRESSWIRE

Bowanko will compete with Mike Brewster, Patrick Lewis and Jacques McClendon for the starting center role with the Jaguars.

SB Nation 2014 NFL Draft

With the No. 205 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars have picked Virginia center Luke Bowanko. While the Jaguars addressed offense early and often in the draft class, they waited until the tail end of the sixth round to add a center.

The addition of a center is entirely unsurprising after the aggressive pursuit of two-time Pro Bowl center Alex Mack in free agency. The Cleveland Browns center was given the transition tag, but the Jaguars negotiated with him anyway, extending a contract offer, but it was matched by the Browns, sending Mack back to Cleveland.

Bowanko is much bigger than the average NFL center and will be a contrast from the 6'3, 292-pound Brad Meester who announced his retirement after the 2013 NFL season. At 6'6, 302 pounds, Bowanko is very tall who started his career with the Cavaliers at right guard before moving to the center position for the final two seasons of his collegiate career.

As a late sixth round pick, fans shouldn't expect Bowanko to start for the Jaguars as a rookie; however, there's no reason to be shocked if he ends up winning the job, as he'll compete with Mike Brewster, Patrick Lewis and Jacques McClendon for the role.
