Rhett's Mock Offseason 2.0

The Jacksonville Jaguars hire Lovie Smith as Defensive Coordinator.

Chris Clemons and Toby Gerhart are cut, saving $8 mill in cap space.

Free Agency:

Marcedes Lewis TE JAX - 2 Years, $5 Million: Lewis is a vocal leader and veteran on offense, and can still make plays.

Chad Henne QB JAX - 2 Years, $7 Million: Henne isn't very good, but he's not super bad either. He's a veteran, helps Blake, and can step in and still win a ball game. That's as much as you can ask for out of your backup QB.

Bryan Walters WR JAX - 3 Years, $3 Million: GRIT(as some people like to say). Tough and consistent.

Jonas Gray RB JAX - 1 Year, $600k: Strong and powerful back. Compete for roster spot.

Von Miller LB DEN - 5 Years, $75 Million: A huge contract for an amazing player. This is just slightly less than Justin Houston's monster contract. Von Miller fills a need and upgrades another position at the same time. In the base defense, Von Miller can play the OTTO Strong side linebacker position and seal the edge/rush the passer. When the Jaguars move into the nickel, dime, etc. and the OTTO is no longer on the field, Miller can move to the LEO position. The goal is to have your best defensive player, Von Miller, on the field as much as possible. Obviously Fowler will sub in as well. We can also throw some 34 in, and go with a big front consisting of Miller, Odrick, and Alualu...and Miller/Skuta blitzing on the outside. He's versatile and makes the defense much better.

Janoris Jenkins CB STL - 3 Years, $15 Million: At first I was skeptical about Jenkins. We're all aware of his character issues from college. And although he's not getting suspended games, he's still a loud mouth and a bit of a diva. But he is a talented cornerback from the state of florida, a former gator, and he's consistently getting better every season. This isn't to knock Aaron Colvin either, Colvin is solid cornerback. I just think he's better at the nickel position, and finding another corner to play outside on a normal basis across from House will help this defense tremendously.

Alex Mack C CLE - 4 Years, $36 Million: Opts out of his contract, comes back to the team who tried to save him from Cleveland. An excellent veteran center will sure up this offensive line. Hope he's a better snapper than Wisniewski.

Draft:

1(5). Jalen Ramsey DB Florida State - Jaguars finally find their safety prospect. Ramsey is a special prospect with elite athleticism, vision, and instincts that reminds some people of Charles Woodson. Ramsey will finally enable Gus Bradley's defense to be played the way it was envisioned.

2(36). Shilique Calhoun DE Michigan State - The Jags like to have 3 LEOs to rotate throughout games. Here's #3. Calhoun is fast, agile, and fluid with a plethora of pass rushing moves. Gives Fowler some much needed competition in camp.

3(68). William Jackson III CB Houston - Jackson has the size, speed, and quickness NFL front office's covet in their secondary. Jackson has solid technique and is comfortable in coverage. He's aggressive and physical enough to compete for the ball in the air. Has the potential to be a lockdown corner in this scheme. Will have to compete for playing time.

4(100). Joe Haeg OT North Dakota State - Has excellent quickness and mobility, but lacks power and a lean lower body results in a weak anchor. Haeg will need an offseason or two in an NFL strength program, but can eventually develop into a starter. At worst, he's a quality backup.

5(132). Kelvin Taylor RB Florida - The son of Jaguars' great Fred Taylor. Taylor brings a combination of power, instincts, and lateral agility. He's also improved his pass protection. The Jaguars need some quality depth at the RB position behind TJ Yeldon. There will be open competition for the #2-#3 RB positions between Taylor, Robinson and Gray. My honest opinion is Robinson is the odd man out. I'd expect Taylor to be the #2 back, acquiring around 5-10 carries a game, with Gray being the short yardage and goal line back.

6(164). Tom Hackett P Utah - Big leg with incredible accuracy. 106/244 career punts lands inside the 20, 68/244 being 50+, and a long of 76. Super Bowl.

6(186). Dadi Lhomme Nicolas OLB VT - Played defensive end in college, but is too small at 6'3" 235 to play the position in the NFL. Nicolas is a project to transition to OLB, but is an excellent special teamer, making him worth attempting to develop him.

7(196). Vernon Adams Jr. QB Oregon - Camp Arm. He has excellent mobility and big play ability, if he shows some progress in camp, he might be worth keeping around. If not, it was a 7th round pick.
