Jacksonville Jaguars Free Agent Update: Saturday Edition

Update [2008-3-1 13:22:42 by River City Rage]:: Defensive End Justin Smith has signed with the San Francisco 49ers. He received a 45 million dollar contract with 20 million guaranteed. No wonder Jacksonville stayed away.

What do we know?

Day one of Free Agency is behind us and things are already becoming more clear for the Jaguars.  First off, we've found our number one receiver in Jerry Porter and we've backed up David Garrard with Cleo Lemon.  Two big needs addressed in the first day, not too shabby.

There were some losses as well.  Safety Gibril Wilson, who I was absolutely convinced that the team would sign took the big money out of the Oakland Raiders.  16 million in guaranteed money, six million more than Porter received from the Jaguars.  Un-Real.  The Raiders are filling the void that the Redskins usually occupy with giant contracts for middle grade players.

So far the Jaguars are 2 for 2 on visits.  This seems to be pretty normal for the front office as we don't like to see players leave.  Keep that in mind.

Who is our next signing:

It's going to be Cornerback Drayton Florence, formerly  of the San Diego Chargers.  I reported this earlier and the more I think about it, the more excited I get.  The San Diego Union Tribune says it's a done deal, though Pro Football Talk says it's "premature".  Either way, Drayton is visiting with the Jaguars on Saturday, and we tend to sign everyone that visits.

As far as I know, he's the only visit tomorrow.

Marcus Stroud:

Marcus visited the Buffalo Bills on Friday and is likely to be traded there sometime soon.  The going rate for large and established defensive tackles is a 3rd round pick and something else, ether a 5th round pick or a player.  Shaun Rogers went to the Cleveland Browns for a 3rd and a DB.  Buffalo just happens to have an extra 3rd and 5th, and made a pretty significant cap cut in Larry Tripplett which seems a clear precursor to the trade.  If we got a 3rd and 5th round for Marcus Stroud as well as relieved the Jaguars of the 5 million dollar salary and the disappointment of a player past his prime, I'd sing from the rooftops.  Other Suitors for Stroud include the Atlanta Falcons and the New York Giants.  Tom Coughlin drafted Stroud, Mike Smith coached him, it just makes sense.

How are we doing:

Here is my dream situation.  The team starts Monday having signed Jerry Porter, signed Cleo Lemon, signed Drayton Florence, traded for Troy Williamson, and traded Marcus Stroud for a 3rd and 5th round pick.  We instantly improve our offense, remedy a big part of our secondary, and increase our ability to move in the draft to grab the big defensive guys that we're clearly going to target.  Jacksonville, provided that we pull all this off, will have made a dramatic improvement to their team that has to be in the top 2 or 3 of all NFL teams in the early free agent period.

There are some out there criticizing our front office, but if all these things shake out, they deserve a big hug, simply because they've already started the process of taking our Jaguars to the next level.  Drayton Florence will be a fantastic addition, especially when we play the pass heavy teams like the Colts and Patriots.  If we're going to beat the big boys, we have to match them.

And forever more, we'll never see another mock draft that shows the Jaguars picking up a wide receiver in the first round.

Crazy Rumor of the Night:(That's been confirmed!)

Garry Cobb, a Philladelphia Radio guy, reported on air that the Jaguars had an offer on the table for Randy Moss.  Ugh.

Not so crazy rumor of the night:

The Agent for DE Justin Smith says that he's talking to the Jaguars.  Not surprising, but I don't think he'll sign with us unless he wants to leave money on the table.

Who's leaving the Team:

  • Michael Wright of the Florida Times-Union says that the Atlanta Falcons are going after OT Maurice Williams, as well as other unnamed teams.
  • As we know, Ernest Wilford went to the Dolphins.
  • I've heard that Quinn Gray is being targeted by the Vikings, but I can't find anything to verify that.
Final Thoughts:

I'm very pleased with free agency so far, though we're two moves away from me being giddy and overjoyed with what we've accomplished.  Thanks to everyone who followed along with me today, expect this sort of coverage for the next few days!

Jags free agents
Like you Chris, I was told the Jags would be going hard after Gibril Wilson. When I heard Oakland  was in the mix, I knew then, especially after what Tommy Kelley got, that there was no way the Jags would  come anywhere close to what the Raiders would offer. 16 million guaranteed, with 40 million over six years. Are you kidding me! Thats just insane for a safety thats pretty good, but not in the same class as an Ed Reed or Sanders. As I understand it, Al Davis has to pay way over the amount of other teams, just to get players to want to play for the Raiders. Very sad situation in Oakland.

At first I wasn't all that excited about the Jags getting Jerry Porter, because I didn't know as much about him as I do now. Porter is an exceptional athlete, who can get separation, and has great hands. The knock on him is his attitude,  that he takes plays off, and can be a malcontent.  I think coming to a winning organization, having a bigger role in the offense, Todd Monken working with him, and the financial incentive, Porter should start playing up to his huge potential.

Cleo Lemon, from reading his scouting report, sounds very similar to where David Garrard was a couple years ago. Has a strong arm, quick release, mobile, can throw into tight spaces, very well liked, good attitude, and can make all the throws. The bad is he locks onto his target, doesn't work through his progressions, has trouble reading defenses, and  lacks touch on the deep throws. Now we all know what Shula did for Garrard, if he can get Lemmon close to playing at the same level, this could be a very good pickup.

I didn't hear anything about the Jags going after Florence prior to the start of free agency, but I had a gut feeling Florence would end up with the Jags. The way teams beat the Jags defense was to spread them out, have four WR, and with no pass rush, they easily completed passes right down the field. The Jags were forced to play nickel defense over 50% of the time last year so having Florence, the Jags will have a lot better chance of finally winning the division from the Colts. Of course we need to  find a DE that can stop the run, and get to the QB.

One last note, that crazy rumor about the Jags having an offer on the table for Moss, was true. I think its safe to say now, after the Jags got Porter, that Randy Moss was they guy I heard the Jags would go after at WR. It's all about the money baby.

I should have guessed, but damn.
Good Job Jaguars for being aggressive, even if they didn't get him, I'm glad they tried.

I'm pretty excited about our situation at receiver, we're bringing at least 8 guys into camp this year and only 5 or 6 will make the team.  With the exception of Matt Jones, we're probably going to cut someone we like.  The exception being that I just don't like Matt Jones, and would shed no tear if he was cut.

I really, really hope we get Florence.

Stroud wants a raise?!?!?!?!
PFT is reporting that Stroud's reasoning for shopping himself is his desire for a raise.... WTF!! That has got to be inaccurate information... how on Earth could a guy possibly believe that after failing a steroid test, finishing on IR, and still having lingering injury issues that he desearves a raise...
Rosenhaus is one of the BEST agents in the league, so if anyone can get it for his guy, it's Drew. For our sake, I hope he does just that. In my opinion, if we paid strictly for production, Stroud would DESERVE around 3 million. Based on this FA period's importance for D-linemen, maybe we'll still be able to trade or renegociate his contract. If not, I say "Off to the Gallows wit' em!"

No Way.
I call BS on that report.  No way Stroud's asking for a raise.  I think that the Jaguars and Drew Rosenhaus have a mutual interest in making discontent between the two seem as though it's the reason why Stroud is on the market.

But there's no way he went into Buffalo and demaned a raise.  In fact, I've heard he's still up there.

There's a game being played here, we have to watch out that we don't become part of it.

D. Florence a JAG!!!
Well, it's official, D Florence, FORMERLY of San Diego is now a Jaguar. The deal is reported to contain 12 million in bonus money. I love the deal, T. Cousin is getting old and this definatly spells the end for him, although I don't think Florence is starter material, he definatly shores up a glaring weakness we had twice a year when facing the COLTS. Also, I hear he's a real quality guy off the field, working his butt off each off-season and constantly helping out inner city youth. Sounds like a great catch to me!
